Hello All,
I have my 990 connected to my TV (Hitachi 57S500) with the component video out. This is the only video connection that I have between the two. The only video inputs to the 990 that I have are a component vid from my cable box, component vid from my DVD player, and a composite vid from my crusty old VCR.

My question is this, when I have my cable (video 1) or my dvd selected as input, I don't see OSD on my TV when doing things like changing the volume on the 990, etc. But when I have the input set as my VCR (video 2 still using component out to my TV) I do see the OSD when changing volume, etc. Likewise, when I go into the menu on the 990, it blacks out the screen on the TV before the menu is displayed. But the menu indicates this is normal.

So it would seem that when my 990 is doing the upconversion from s-vid or composite vid to compnontent vid it is able to display the OSD information. But when it is just outputting what is being input to one of the component video connections it cannot. Anyone else experience this?

Thanks in advance,
sraber

I'm experiencing the same peculiarity with my setup: I don't get the pop-up OSD with my DVD player. I have no problem accessing the 990's menu but no pop-up display. I have my DVD player set to progressive scan and I think that's why the OSD isn't showing up. When I get a chance I'll change the setup on the DVD player to interlaced and see if the OSD shows up then. Perhaps Outlaw can correct this anomaly with a software update - video upconversion to component should pass the pop-up display (Marantz, Rotel, & others do).

Yeah, I tried to do just that. Changed my DVD player output to interlaced and it did not help. Also, my cable box outputs both interlaced and progressive depending on the channel. I think the upconversion is passing the OSD since I see the OSD when I'm upconverting from my VCR's composite input.

It seems it only happens when the input is component, regardless of progressive or interlaced. Maybe the component switching is like the DVI switching and the signal is not modified in any way between the component in and the component out. If that's the case then the OSD is never superimposed on the output. Since the signal between s-video or composite in and component out the OSD has to be modified during the upconversion, that would give the 990 the chance to superimpose the OSD prior to output...

Thanks for the response,
sraber

Sraber is exactly right - the component inputs do not get the OSD pop-up. They only get the OSD menu because it takes the place of the component signal (unlike the s-video and composite inputs, which have both the OSD menu and the pop-up overlayed on top of the input signal).

Thanks for the response, gonk. If memory serves, this was the same behavior that the Rotel RSP-1068 exhibited when I demo'd it some time ago. As I said earlier, this is not a big deal to me. Just wanted to make sure that it's supposed to work this way since there was no reference to it in the manual...

later,
sraber

So,

Component=Menu, but no pop-up
S-Video,Composite=Menu and Pop-up

What does DVI get, nothing?

Just to go a step further. If your display is not capable of showing 480i through your hd input, then you will not get a menu through component either, but thats not really the 990's fault.

How about 720p?

The OSD menu produced for the 990's component output is a 480i signal that takes the place of the selected video source (assuming the video source is a component input). In most cases, that's not a problem - it's the same resolution produced by older interlaced DVD players, for example, as well as many PS2 games. Some displays, however, will only accept 480p, 720p, or 1080i. It's pretty rare.
