Anyone care to think or might know how the two sub/LFE outputs on the 990 can be used. What I would love to be able to do is assign the low frequencies of my surrounds to a sub behind my listening position and then have my main sub handle my fronts, center, and LFE (.1) info.

Thanks

The FAQ touches on this briefly:

Quote:
Q. The 990 has two "subwoofer out" jacks. Are they dual or stereo?

A. The subwoofer outputs are dual mono, since low frequency information is mixed as a non-directional, mono signal.

They are exactly the same. At the HE show, Peter said that they are there to save you from having to buy a Y-adapter if you are running dual subs.

Bummer. I was hopping they were like the Sunfire Super Cinema III Theater Grand Ultimate Receiver Processor Whatever that has four subwoofer outputs that I think can be assigned.

If it is just an internal Y cable, then I don't see that as feature worth putting on the spec sheet.

Thanks for the quick replies.

You could use an FBD to manage both signals:

At $99 its a good option for tuning both outputs at the preamp level.

Even 4 of these would still make the 990 a lot cheaper than the "Sunfire Super Cinema III Theater Grand Ultimate Receiver"

If your sub has a high pass filter built into it you could strip the bass freq's. going to the rear surrounds off by connecting the amp to the sub using speaker wire .

This would allow the sub to do the grunt work for the rears by pushing any bass that might be found in those channels . The high freq's would then be passed back out of the sub via speaker wire connection too you rear surrounds . You could not use the LFE out on the 990 to do this because the channel separation in 5,6 or 7.1 playback is dedicated to that particular speaker . You cannot assign the LFE to take over the bass output for the rears . Besides there is very little bass assigned to rear spks. anyway .

As for the fronts and center the same method mentioned above should work for them as well . However, some pre/pro's offer bass management functions which allow you to assign the bass output to either the sub LFE ONLY, MAINS ONLY or BOTH . I don't know if the 990 includes this option or not . Anyone?

Subwoofer-specific frequencies - usually <120Hz - are, as the FAQ says, non-directional, not by design by in the way we hear them. The reason a single subwoofer will suit a system is that the sound cannot be accurately pinpointed directionally by the human ear, as it can with high frequencies.

The reason you would use two subwoofers in tandem - other than having them built into our main speakers - is to supplement the LF sound in a larger or less-than-optimally-configured space, but you wouldn't need,or want, to differentiate the signals in any way to do so properly.

Outlaw has an informative section on Subwoofer placement, for both single and double subs, in their LFM-1 manual here.

I got the idea of doing this from a guy that has his HT on a web site. Mike Nap was his name I think. He stated that he found that a sub behind his position worked nice for the surround info, so that is why I was kind of wanting to try this.

I don't really want to run the speaker cables to the sub, etc. because I can not do it cleanly.

One thing I was thinking of doing was to maybe get an ICBM and run the four surround channels through that to get the bass info from them. The surround speakers in this case would be set to large in the 990. Could be kind of pricy for a little bit of bass from the surrounds.

I only use the surrounds for HT and not music.

That was probably Mike Knapp of Home Theater Talk , although his system seems to still be using "just" the one infinite baffle (IB) sub. It's an impressive setup - where else are you likely to find 9 M200 monoblocks? smile

I too have an IB setup, which only issue I can see is it takes a lot of watts and drivers to get the SPL up to "theater" level.
