Love the sound, hate the remote... I can handle not having a learning remote, but the number of supported components for this remote is wholly inadequate. I don't have the time, more aptly, the patienece to make my harmony remote work the unit. I will wait until the harmony supports the unit. That being said, I thought that the remote with the unit would support Arcam or at least have more than one code for Motorolla cable boxes. I know that Outlaw wanted to make this a bare bones remote becuse they assume we have a high end remote, but that doesn't mean it should stink. I can live with two remotes until the harmony posts the preamp online, but for a possible future upgrade, increase the quality of the remotes code database. I would pay the extra $10-20 for it. That way if my harmony breaks I don't have 8 remotes again...

Nice to see the 990 is continuing the Outlaw tradition. (Tongue firmly and good-naturedly in cheek.)

The only thing I really disliked about the 950 was the remote. However, I do understand the Outlaw's logic in this and I agree with them. Most HT enthusiasts will have a universal remote, like a Harmony, and providing a functional but less expensive remote with the unit maximizes the price point value.

I would suggest, however, that Outlaw make a point of contacting Harmony and sharing their remote codes with them so they can add the 990 to the Harmony database ASAP.

Since a lot of people use Universal Remote's MX series it would be nice if Outlaw could get the codes to UR so they could include them in their next database update. It's easy enough to learn the codes but most of the time UR seems to be able to get undocumented discrete codes that come in really handy for macros. I have three separate systems worth of remotes loaded into my MX-700 and all of my OEM remotes are in a drawer with the batteries out.

I'm hoping that somebody (either Outlaw themselves or some early adopters) will come up with some good setup files for the 990 on the MX-700 and Pronto platforms. Likewise, the number of Harmony remotes out there makes it very adviseable to get coordinated with Harmony, which I hope will happen before long - Shawn may be suffering from one of the lesser drawbacks of being a true early adopter, and Harmony and Outlaw may not have gotten all that ready yet.

To use the 990 with a Harmony remote, try setting up the Harmony on-line setup process to work for a Sherwood/Newcastle R-965 (which currently is in the Harmony data base). That should get the correct naming and number of inputs right, etc. I don't know if the 990 IR remote codes are the same as the R-965 codes. If not, then you would have to "learn" the 990 remote codes for each of the corresponding entries in the Harmony data base for the R-965.

Goldie,

I know how to make the harmony learn, but it drives me nuts to do it. It takes forever and works 1/3 of the time. It isn't worth my time. I will try the Newcastle tonight, but I imagine they are different remotes.

Thanks for the suggestion. We're working on getting the codes for the Model 990 to Harmony so that they will hopefully be in their data base by the time you are all ready to install your new processors. We're also getting the codes to the other major manufacturers. The 965 codes will not control the 990.

Thanks Scott. It would make life simpler. I think the remote is easy to use, but it isn't great. Especially when I can't even program my CD player in.

Hello Sfox7076,

I just received confirmation that the 990 has been added to the Harmony code list under audio/video switchers. Please give it a try and let me know if you run into any problems!
