990 is too big for me

While I realize this is a minor issue for most, I was disappointed when looking at the 990 specs and noticed the dimensions. I have 8" clearance in my equipment rack...so the height being just under 8" wasn't a problem...although it is a bit of a tight fit. Anyway, what bothered me was the depth of the unit...nearly 18"! Might not be a problem for other people, but for me it is a major problem.
I wonder if other people are going to be surprised when they pull this monster out of the box and it doesn't fit in their racks.
In my case, it would barely fit. However, once I add an additional 6" clearance for the cables, it poses a problem for me.
I'm curious why a processor has to be so deep? For comparison purposes, the Anthem AVM30 and D-1 are about 14 and 15 inches deep, respectively. Given that I consider my rack of standard size, I imagine I may not be alone in concerns in this area.
However, on the bright side, it is roughly the same size as the 770. Thus, if you've been able to house the 770, I imagine you won't have a problem with the size of the 990.

Wow, 18"? I never noticed that either. Thats 3 1/2" deeper than the 950 and actually 2" deeper than the 770! Either I am going to have to pass or buy a whole new rack because that will definitely not work the way it is now. Bummer.

Ouch! Thanks for the info. I am going to have a tough time trying to fit it in my equipment cabinet. I only have 20.5 inches so may have a tough time with the XLR connections That's one of the deepest processors in the market.

I just ran over to the theater room to check the depth I will have on the rack. No problem, the depth is 18 1/2" and I have almost a foot of room behind it. Bring it on Outlaw!

I noticed on one of the 990 photos that there are vents on the top toward the rear. I wonder how much clearance we'll need for heat dissipation? My Outlaw OASE-A4 only gives me 1". Don't make me get the reciprocating saw out!!

Speaking of saws, I may have to get one out for the 990 in my rack. It's just over 20" deep. That's going to be cutting it pretty close. I'll probably have to get creative with the back wall of my cabinet.

Gonk,
It's too bad that there isn't some sort of good quality cable with right angle rca's. But my allowance ($'s) is too small to let me replace all the cabling at the same time as replacing the pre/pro. I think it's only going to be my component video to my TV that's going to kill me. They are MIT One-Wire with WBT connectors. That One-Wire is pretty stiff stuff.

very interesting. thanks for that. i guess that would work. but putting something like that in between my cables and the pre/pro just seems wrong. i doubt i'd hear or see a difference. but just knowing there's something else in the mix, I don't know.....

I use many of those right angle adaptors and they work great. I took one and held it very close to my ear and I couldn't hear a thing. YMMV

That depth is a killer. I too had to make cutouts on the back of our cabinet for the 950 wiring and got caught doing it, made for some tense moments. Now I'm going to have to cut out an 8 x 18 chunk to accomodate the 990...maybe she won't notice.

Thanks for the input Keta. I might just give those a shot. I guess I have to figure out what I like least...cutting up my cabinet or using those little doo-hickies.

sraber I bought a couple dozen from this guy about a year ago to use on the rear of my 770 because the depth caused interference. Trust me at 50 cents each its worth the try.
