Hello,
I am in the works of purchasing a 1050 this week. However I have a few questions before hand. I'm kind of new to this. Only real things I've seen people complain about this receiver is 1) limited digital inputs, and no DP or PLII ? ?. Not quite clear on the component video switching, and whether I would need it or not.

How will the limited digital inputs affect me ? My setup will consist of
1) Sony DualCassette
1) Sony DVD player w/o decoder (unless you think I need one)
1) Sony HiFi 4 head VCR
1) Turntable ( yes I still use this, but know outlaw doesn't provide a phono input so I'll use an auxillary input i guess)

Speakers,

2 Polk RT 55i's
2 Polk R10's
1 Polk CS245i Center

Sub still in the air thinking of going with SVS 20-39CS (1)

I don't have a tv with any type of inputs as of yet, but will later in the year. Probably a HDTV of some sort. Will the 1050 accomodate for my devices plus a HDTV down the road ?? I just don't want to be purchasing a receiver that will soon be out of date ? ? I was just looking at the Denon 2802 on their site. Looks nice, but I know the insides are not as stealth as the 1050. Thanks in advance ,

Jay-1

You wrote "outlaw doesn't provide a phono input so I'll use an auxillary input i guess"

You will get extremely unsatisfactory results if you do this.

To use the signal coming off a phonograph cartridge you need tons o' gain and special, extreme equalization - these functions are provided by a phono preamp the output of which you can connect to an Aux input.

But if you connect the ttable directly to the Aux input, the sound will be tinny and wimpy.

kbeartx is right about the phono -- you'll need a phono preamp (or use an old receiver with a phono input -- you could probably hook the turntable up to the old receiver, and run the tape loop out from the old receiver to the 1050; clumsy, but an option nonetheless) for the turntable.

As for the digital inputs, you've only got one device that will have a digital output -- the DVD player. An HDTV decoder would also have one at some point in the future. That's two digital connections. The 1050 has 3. You should be fine on digital inputs unless your DVD player and future HDTV decoder both have coaxial outputs only (it might not hurt to watch for a DVD player that offers coaxial and optical outputs, as it gives you some flexibility).

Component video switching is not really critical. In the price range of the 1050, it's probably not even very desirable; it's hard to get really good component video switching in a receiver in this price range, especially switching that will support HDTV. Best bet is to go directly from the DVD player (and eventually the HDTV decoder, assuming the HDTV decoder is separate from the TV), which eliminates any need for switching.

Comments about the absence of DPL II are referring to the new Dolby Pro Logic II (a major revamp to the old Pro Logic). It offers surround sound decoding from analog sources like VCR's and Cable TV that sound somewhere between original DPL and the true digial formats Dolby Digital and DTS.

Last comment is about the sub. It's apparently an awesome sub, but you will need to buy an amp to drive it (I mention this because of a comment recently here about using one of the 1050's channels to drive that exact sub, which can't really be done).

Try the Parasound PPH-100 phono pre-amp. You can get one for around $80 on eBay. Gonk's correct. You should run your DVD player directly to your TV and avoid switching altogether.

Running the dvd directly to the tv may be a possibility once I get a tv with inputs. Guess I will order this baby tomorrow. Can't wait. !

I own your subs bigger brother(16-46) and bought it in an amp/sub combo otherwise you could get it in a powered model. Either way the svs will not dissapoint you but I agree with the above, that hardly any receiver will power a passive sub well.
