The Outlaw pre show newsletter stated there will also be "a BIG (or little?) suprise". Hopefully someone attending will be able to let us know what it is and give some feedback on the 990 first hand. An amp to mate with the 990?

I was happy before that my schedule alowed the time to get into the city for the show but now (and isn't it just like 'em) more fun and surprises. I'm going in Friday and spending the day, as I know some others herein are. Between us we'll have info online right away. Not so sure my camera is working as it should but I'm sure someone will collect some pics for all to see. And how cool is it that someone(s) will be hooking up 990's as fast as they can get home Sunday night. Their ears will begin to transform these forums from moderate speculation to real sound/listening reporting (since the Beta-dudes and dudettes are all silent). Exciting times for sure and as always a pleasure to be part of the community

I've heard the phrase "pre-production" used several times in this forum and while I generally understand that "pre-production" means "not ready for sale", I do not understand all the phases that a product must go through to reach the store's shelf. I would appreciate it if someone could explain what happens in pre-production and what steps come next to make the product available to the consumer.

Here's my understanding of the process (it's probably an oversimplification, but it may help)... The design has to start out on paper (presumably a design document of some sort, followed by component selection and board layouts and so forth), but it can't jump straight from paper to mass production on an assembly line, so you have to build a few samples first. Some of the earliest samples may simply be mock-ups (empty or nearly empty shells with front and rear panels laid out but little or none of the "guts" inside). Complete, working test samples would have be built at some point, and they would then get picked over and re-done a bit to get things shaken out properly (possibly over a couple generations of test units). it is samples like this that I would expect to be used for beta testing once the design is far enough along. Only once the hardware and software is locked in would the factory start a full-blown assembly line to crank out large numbers of units. Until that assembly line kicks in, any samples that are rattling around (in-house testing, external beta testing, trade show demos) would be what I'd call "pre-production".

Dean & Gonk:
Here's a dog's eye view, since as many fellow Saloon residents know, it can be a long time to get something into production.
* Product concept goes to drawings and schematics * Drawings go to ID mock-ups, schmatics to breadboards * Breadboards to first spin of boards * Boards on a breadboard * First hand built samples with boards being changes to reflect updates * Software started, tested, de-bugged, tested, debugged, tested -- -you get the idea * "Off-tool" samples with latest boards and software * Alpha testing * Pre-production samples/pilot run * Beta test at the same times as environmental testing, shipping testing, safety agency approval process, FCC (or other emmissions/RFI/EMI) testing, licensing approvals as needed from Dolby, DTS and maybe others * Fix bugs and hardware issues and then go back two steps to retest * Keep repeating until the aspirin runs out. * Get more aspirin * Cartons, manuals, other fun stuff you forgot and now have to catch up on * FINALLY: Production.....
As many here know from their own jobs, ain't it a peach!

But there's nothing pre-production about the 990. It's a real viable product that's hopefully coming off the boat soon.
Man, this carrot has been dangling in front of me for too long. I'm ready to buy. I wish Outlaw were ready to sell.
Definitely looking forward to the onsite reviews at the show.

I guess last night. I saw it this morning at 05:00 CST.
Among other things, here is the most important part:
An update for those on the Model 990 reservation list: The shipment is in sight, and we will absolutely begin shipments this coming month. Depending on a few last minute details, we expect to begin contacting the first of those on the reservation list with a confirmation/conversion message within a week or so after we return to the Hideout.

I got it last night. Here's what the newsletter said: How would you like to be one of the first to own a Model 990 Preamplifier?
To be honest, the Outlaws are sometimes a bit lazy, and we'd really rather not pack up all the gear we're bringing down to this weekend's Home Entertainment Show at the New York Hilton and haul it back to the Hideout. Therefore, to make our lives easier and yours more interesting, we've decided to sell all of the production level Outlaw products we're bringing to the Show, along with the two speaker systems supplied by our friends at Atlantic Technology. This will include some amplifiers, an ICBM, and a few Model 990's! (Sorry, the video projector is not included, and pre-production equipment has to go back to the Hideout!)
With the exception of the 990s, all of the equipment will be sold at our standard "B Stock" prices on a first-come, first-served basis. For those not familiar with Atlantic Technology, we will have two different speaker systems available: a brand new "System 3200" Plasma Speaker System and a brand new "System 8200".
- The System 3200 includes a pair of front channel speakers and a center channel speaker. The retail price for this system is $1,400, but we are offering it at $800 to one lucky buyer. - The System 8200 (Atlantic's best) is a complete seven speaker system and is the perfect match for Outlaw components. It includes two sets of front channel speakers (one for the front and one for the back surround channels), a center channel speaker and a pair of bipole/dipole surround speakers. The System also includes pedestals for the front, surrounds and back surround speakers and comes with premium gloss side panels. (Note: Since our own LFM-1 subwoofers will be taking care of the bass in our demo room, the system does not include the Atlantic Technology "ped-woofers".) The retail price for this system is $13,370, but thanks to Atlantic Technology we are able to offer it for $7,900. We recognize that this may be a substantial hit to your credit card, so we will also accept a cashier's check as payment for all or part of the system if necessary.
Come to our suite, see what we have on display, take a look and listen, and if you can't wait to get home to order new gear for shipment to your home theater, please see Scott or Diane to make purchase arrangements for the available demo gear and to pick it up at the end of the Show. All demo equipment purchased at the Show MUST be removed from our suite no later than 6PM on Sunday, May 1st.
We anticipate a high demand for the Model 990's that will be in the demo room. (There will be three available.) Therefore, in fairness to all, the lucky buyers will be selected in a random drawing. If you are interested in one of the Model 990's, come to our suite at any time before Sunday at 1:30PM and put your name and a home or cell phone number in the box we'll have available. We'll choose the buyers' names at 2PM on Sunday and call them from the suite. If we cannot reach a prospective buyer and do not get a call back within ten minutes we will select an alternate buyer. As with the other equipment, you must come up to our suite at the end of the Show on Sunday to verify your credit card data and to collect the equipment.
Don't forget, the Show starts on Friday at the New York Hilton, and we are located in the Morgan Suite. Come on up and visit, listen to a demo, meet the Outlaws, ask Peter for a tschotska, and if you are interested, get some great demo gear at a good price.
In addition to everything we've already announced, here's yet another reason to come and visit us: there may be one more BIG (or should we say "little"?) surprise, but you'll have to come to the Show to find out what it is.
A few notes in closing: - For those who requested free Show tickets, we have mailed all we have to the lucky recipients. If you haven't received one by now, we apologize, but our supply was exhausted before we got to your place on the request list. - An update for those on the Model 990 reservation list: The shipment is in sight, and we will absolutely begin shipments this coming month. Depending on a few last minute details, we expect to begin contacting the first of those on the reservation list with a confirmation/conversion message within a week or so after we return to the Hideout. - We'll be back to you with a complete wrap-up of the HE Show and all of our announcements sometime in Mid-May. We'll try to get to it sooner, but please bear with us, as we are about to start the busiest and most exciting month in Outlaw history! - We apologize in advance for any delays in responding to customer service e-mails and calls from Tuesday, April 26th through Monday, May 2nd. Scott and Steve will be on-line during the week, but due to their responsibilities at the Show it may take a bit longer to get back to you than normal.
That's it. We're packing up the chuck wagon, hitching the horses up, and making the trek down to New York. We look forward to seeing you there!
Regards,
The Outlaws

Thanks Gonk.
Usually they update the "Announcements" part of the forum when they send something out. I guess they haven't had a chance.
You're right, it doesn't look like it will be long now.
Thanks again.

Does anyone have a sense of how many units are on the boat & will be released to the waiting list? I know Outlaw hasn't said, but what usually constitutes a shipment via boat? I imagine they can share a container with some other products, but based on what they've done in the past, any guesses on how many will be hitting our shores in the first wave?
I was traveling when the the initial reservation was released, I did get signed up an hour or so later, but I'm hoping I'm part of that 1st shipment (otherwise I need to buy something else - I'm without a processor).

Not only feedback, I wouldn't mind see some higher rez pictures (especially the back of the unit).

Feedback and a few pictures have appeared in this thread . Nothing real high res on any of them, but we've already got a massive rear panel picture of the 990 from Outlaw.

Just wanted to let you guys know that the "little" BIG surprise was a new Subwoofer...the LFM-2. Its is about half the physuical size of the LFM-1. It is an 8" drive and 150W amp. The retail price is $299.
I thought the outlaw demo with the Atlantic Tech speaker system was the most enjoyable one at the show. They had the 990 with the 770, two LFM-1 subs and the Atlantic Tech 8200 speaker system. A dwin DLP was the video source.
Overall I was very disappointed in the show. There were alot of big names that did not have a presence there that were there in previous years. Stewart, Sony, JVC, on and on. Last years show was 100% better than this years show.
Oh, Oulaw also presented a spec sheet for the 990 which had combo prices for the 990 with the 3 various amps.
The 790 amp was non-existent at the show and it was explained that they still are having problems with heat issues. They do not want to release a buggy unit so they are going to wait until most of the bugs are out of it.

Hi all, I was at the HE show also. As already noted the big surprise is a new Sub The LFM-2. Frankly, I was quite suprised at how large the LFM-1 is when seen in person. For those that are considering the LFM-1 or the 990 you should be prepared that these units are BIG!!!!!. You will need some real room for these. The 990 appears larger than most flagship receivers that I have seen.

Hello agian,
There was no real news to share about the 1070. I was hoping that a demo unit would be avaailable for a preview. There was no operational unit to preview. This was a bummer to me since i made the trip hoping to get a demo of the 1070. I asked about the 1070 and the outlaws would not commit to any real time frames. It appears that the hardware is in place but the sofeware is being revised. I would not expect to get your hands on one for the next few months. For those interested in the 990 if I heard correctly they had 3 units for sale at the show. Your wait may be nearing an end. The 990 was up and running at the show and sounded great to me. I am new the the HT scene and could not imagine anyone being dissappointed when the 990 arrives.

Nice to see Outlaw is continuing with combo pricing - every little bet helps! Now back to my continued debate to the 700 vs. 7100.
