If Microsoft were to go out of business tomorrow, how would you record their passing. What waere the mistakes made that lead to their down fall?

If Microsoft were to go out of business anytime soon, I would say writing an obituary is the least of our problems.
A company that size doesn't die easily. Look at Apple or IBM or any other large company that had low periods (HP is another example). They have so much money and so many employees, that it would take at least a decade for them to get to a point where they vanished into nothingness (more likely is that they'd get bought up by someone larger).
Anyhow, in the exceedingly small chance that Microsoft were to cease to exist tomorrow, I think the obituary would read something like "Oops!"

I think the obit should read like an obscure, meaningless error message, and the only permitted response would be to hit an "OK" button.

Personally, I think the obituary will be printed on BLUE paper and state: A fatal exception has occurred. The Current business will be shut down. Press Any Key to Continue

Yeah, because Windows, Debian, FreeBSD, Solaris, Ubuntu, etc. are just figments of our imaginations.

Well who thought in 1983 that IBM would have gone the route they did?

In true Microsoft fashion the obit would read: " Hit Start and it shutdown"

I think we will see Apple's obit long before Microsoft's.
But the only problem is...because of their proprietary system nobody else will be able to write an obit for Apple so I guess there will actually not be one!

Hard to say, since they're still kicking everyone else in software businesses collective backsides. I guess they'd have to become victims of a terrible natural disaster at this point, like an asteroid strike in Redmond or something.
