After dabbling in audio for 30 years or so I have come to the conclusion after reading this and other forums how little I really know. I notice that very few mfgrs. publish this spec.Which brings me to my question. I have a cursory understanding ,that it speaks of the amps ability to maintain control over the speaker. But I would like someone to explain what is an optimal damping factor?

IIRC it is closely related to the amplifier output impedence and in well designed components will have little effect on any reasonable load.
