I know exactly where you are coming from. Before I bought my Studio Tech Ultra cabinet, (which does a wonderful job hiding wires), I was in the same boat. I bought black fabric from a local craft store and suspended it over the back of the wires, made it difficult to see the cables and didn't block ventilation.
