In that case, the player's display is correct. The 5.1-channel hi-res PCM audio tracks on DVD-Audio discs are packed (compressed without ANY loss of data) using Meridian Lossless Packing. The 2-channel hi-res tracks may or may not be packed: if they're 96/24 then they're usually LPCM (Linear PCM), if they're 192/24 then they're usually PPCM.

Finally got back to checking this board for an answer. I sent back the DAD discs I had because one popped between tracks and the other would mistrack. So much for DAD's. I just checked a DVD-A disc and my Marantz 8400 does send a 48khz PCM signal via coax in to the 950 and the stereo button again did not work until switching dolby formats a couple of times (PLIIC and PLIIM). I pushed stereo again and got Stereo 5 like I wanted. Since I don't have the DAD's anymore I can't try again but I pressed every button on the remote when I had them and all I would get is 96khz PCM on the display and 2ch stereo out. Not a big issue I guess but it does not state in the 950 that I could find that a 96khz signal could not be processed into stereo 5. The published matrix near the front of the manual seems to be a little misleading. According to it any analog or digital signal can be processed into 5ch stereo or even NEO6.1. 44.1khz and 48khz signals are no problem. Evidently just 96khz.

this is my experience too. The 950 can not process high resolution digital signals in anything other than two channel Stereo.

Do you know if any other pre/pro these days can process high resolution digital signals using DTS NEO or DPL II?
