This may be a stupid question, but I will risk the embarrasment in order to make sure my new 950/755 combo is safe from harm.

can the 950 be "stacked" on top of the 755 ?
will this cause too much heat and possible damage to one of the units ? Or are they designed to be stacked with enough air flow in between ?


I have them seperated for now - until we go to counseling.

The 755 needs some good ventilation space on top -- I would recommend no stacking anything on top of it. Give it a couple of inches of breathing room if at all possible.

I've stacked a Behringer BFD on top of the 950 before, but if you know what that is, it doesn't generate much heat at all. I'd keep the 950 away from any amplifiers too.

The BFD's also pretty shallow, so it likely didn't block any of the vent openings on the top of the 950. I've got things pushed as far as I can with my DVD player on top of my 950 (it's deep enough to just start to overlap the vents, which is hardly a good thing), and when I pull my CD changer out to make room for a DVD recorder later this year I plan to shift things around to get the DVD player onto a different shelf.

You know, you see a lot of pictures from trade shows and expos and such with a manufacturer's pre/pro sitting right on top of their giant amp, and they tend to look pretty slick that way - but I wouldn't want to actually use any of them without making some breathing room for the amp first. Maybe when digital switching amps arrive one day and heat rejection from power amps becomes a lot less of an issue, it will be possible to operate them that way without burning things up!

I don't get it-- my 7100 amp runs SIGNIFICANTLY cooler than the 950, which gets guite warm.

I don't stack 'em , but wouldn't putting the warmer 950 on top of the 7100 be all right in this case? (Not that I'm planning on doing this--but it would look cool!

I'd recommend against it. It sounds like your 7100 currently has some good ventilation space around it, probably better than the 950 has. Outlaw's manual recommends 2-3 inches clear above the 7100, and for good reason. There are probably a lot of ventilation slots in the top of the 7100 (similar to the other Outlaw amps), and those need at least some room to get enough airflow to keep the 7100 running cool. The space provided by the 950's feet would not be enough. I've fiddled with the space above my 750 (at ~1 1/4" or 1 1/2" currently, and I'd like to make more room for it), and seen changes in ambient temperature in the space above the 750 of up to five degrees with slight (half-inch or less) changes.

Not to say that it's completely impossible. RAF got the reference sample of the 755 last year and initially ran it in a space in his rack with almost zero breathing room. (Here's a picture .) In that arrangement, the 755 apparently ran quite hot -- I think it was less than a month before he got the spacers for his rack to give the 755 some more breathing room (about 3 inches). From what RAF said at the time, it made a significant difference.
