Presently using Adcom's GTP-760 and GFA-7000 amp...have not been very happy with the system...had to have the amp repaired early on and I am "living" with a DVD dig audio coax input that does not work (use dig 2 for the DVD). Have I had bad luck?
Any input on Adcom out there? Considering 950/770 as a replacement system and step up to 7.1

I don't have any experience with Adcom, so I'm somewhat hesitant to answer, but I will say that I was somewhat surprised last year when I was putting together the first version of my pre/pro chart that the Adcom GTP-830 had a pretty low rating at AudioReview -- 3.0 on a 5-point scale with five reviews.

You'll find plenty of people here who are very happy with the 950/770 combo. It's definitely a good product and a good value.

i bought an adcom gtp 600 in the pro-logic days.

it's the single, worse sounding consumer electronics piece i ever bought.

i've read some articles (scanned is more like it) that say adcom is making improvement, but you'll not likely ever convince me. once bitten, twice shy.

I had an Adcom analog preamp/tuner plus power amp a long time ago. I liked them, but I honestly felt that they didn't match up well against other "value oriented audiophile" gear. Acurus, Parasound, Sony ES, Rotel, etc.

Back in the day when I was using an external DD decoder (Onkyo ED-901) with a "5.1 Ready" receiver (Onkyo 919 - fantastic piece!) I got an Adcom DD decoder attempting to "upgrade" my DD audio quality. The difference between Adcom decoder and my Onkyo was negligible and I ended up selling the Adcom away. It sure looked cool though!

I believe the quality of Adcom has declined over the years.
I, myself bought two Adcom GFA-555 Amplifiers back in the mid eighties, and have no problem with them, other than having to replace their power switches (both of them). They have state-of-the-art great sound. They served me for great quadriphonic sound untill I got the 950.I bought one more used about two years ago, and they are the heart of my system (along with the 950). I also had one of their two channel pre amps (GFP-565), which the 950 replaced. Can't speak for their processors. Heard they didn't sound too well. I know I considered their processord too, but soon forgot them, as they weren't up-to-date with features (such as multichannel inputs and EX/ES).
I understand they are finally coming out with a new up-to-date [finally] processor.

I have the GFA7500 (150w x 5 THX cert amp) and it sounds great with my 950. I have not heard the pre/pros, but I have always liked the sound of the adcom amps. The new ones are even more powerful (and expensive)...if I had to go back (and not get a dealer deal on my adcom) I would definately go with the 770 or 755!

appreciate the thoughts on Adcom....in the process of re-setting up after a move (NJ to TX). Best set-up due to space restrictions does not allow rear access to equipment (can not convince my wife that no one will notice the hole in the kitchen wall).....that leaves me with a massive wire management problem....5 wires from amp to pre/pro plus 5 speaker wires, 6 wires from pre/pro to DVD (SACD), component out DVD, component out HDTV, S-video (4) out NSTC, LD, VCR, out from pre/pro to projector. Audio (1) optical out from DVD, coax out from HDTV, left/right out from reg tv, LD, VCR. 7 power plugs.....at least 34 wires (what did I forget)...no matter how I try it looks like hell....I will not go into the dumb mistakes I have made so far. Despite my lack of finesse I love the challenge.

I agree with surroundophile. I owned a GFP-565 preamp and a pair of GFA-565 monoblocks for about 14 years. During that time I auditioned newer stereo-only components from Adcom and other makers such as Rotel, NAD, etc. At their price-point I found nothing to compare. I use an Adcom GTP-502 preamp/tuner and GFA 5002 amp in my office and it works just fine for me.

I personally like their older amps (535, 545, 555, 565 and 585) better than their newer amps with the exception of the 5002 and 5006. Their HT pre/pro's have been plagued with many problems and have not received very good reviews in either magazines or more importantly from users. IMO.

Well I still have an Adcom 555 used in bridge mode i believe is 600 watts at 8 ohms and I use it for my new JBL-Pro Cinema Subwoofer,it is perfect for my needs, no problems in the last 15 years, also I had some 565 mono blocks that I gave away to my brother when I purchased the subwoofer(a real Sub)I find no need to have a lot of power for my mains since they are very efficient.Anyway no problems at all with the Adcom amps.
