speaking for myself (and probably KCB), the situation has been thought to death.

conclusion:

the 950's analog BM ain't broke. it operates according to design. just flip it on and enjoy dvd-a/sacd. it's an excellent preamp for that. and, if you have a player with high end dacs, watch (listen to) a movie through the 6 channel bypass with the 80 hz x-over engaged. it's excellent for that, too.

this is right out of the box capability, for 900 bucks.

the reasoning for the double bass 'option' was a sound one, for some systems, back when.
but, the 'mod' would make more sense in the nex-gen preamp.

i happen to believe that outlaw has a very good handle on BM. the ICBM (and it's world-wide success) cosigns my opinion on this.

i've declared first-in-line status for the new pre (a long, long while back). it's gonna be all that.

Phew!! I guess I need to do some serious listening down at my ponderosa in sunny Florida.

Thanx for all the replies and helpful information. I need to study up a bit more on the double bass problem and also decide if the icbm unit is something I should invest in. I am more of a music person, so the system needs to excel more on the music than on the movies. Bullets and bangs are cool, but the music is what keeps me sane. I'd like to fine tune things to make the music more than impressive.

Thanx again for the insight.
