Depends, if the DVD player has SACD or DVD-A capiblity you will want to run your 5.1 out for your audio for this. You can use the DACs in the player for CD play, run your Digital coxial or optical out for the 950 to do the DSP modes which you will want for the HT side.
On the video side, again generaly if the unit has component outputs this will be your highest quality connection. (and many myself included prefer to run video straight to a display). I loose the abiltiy to see the 950 OSD not running my DVD via S-video through the 950. But the face of the 950 is all I need to deal with its menus.
I think component is usually on the latest models always going to be your best video connection, but some have been surprised by trying the supposed lesser quality (S-video) out of the same unit and getting the best pic on the S connection. It depends on the unit and the quality of its build.
