I'm something of a novice, and I'm a little perplexed as how to connect headphones up to my 950.

It looks like I'm suppose to use the second zone. But I'm not sure where to go from there. Can I just connect the output of the second zone up to some headphones using an appropriate 2 RCA -> 1/8" stereo headphone jack adapter?

Or do I really need a headphone amp?

How do you all connect up headphones?

The 950 cannot drive headphones directly. You will need an amplifier for the headphones. This company makes one:

You can connect your headphones to your source in a lot of instances. Some DVD players and most CD players will have a 'phone connection.
