I am looking to get the Pioneer Elite DVA-45 DVD player. In an effort to save a little money on interconnects, I was wondering if I could place the DVD player on top on the 950, that way I could buy .5 meter cables. Do you think the 950 would kick off to much heat? Thanks.

The 950 runs pretty cool -- I've got a Panasonic RA60 DVD player sitting on top of mine due to entertainment center space problems, and it's been no problem. It doesn't hurt that the RA60 is shallow enough that it doesn't obstruct the vents on top of the 950.

The cooling vents on top of the Model 950 should be provided at least a couple inches of clearance so that created heat can be properly dissipated. Improper heat ventilation contributes to part failure, audio dropouts and general shortening of equipment life.

The DV-45a is 11" deep, which is almost two inches deeper than my RA60 -- and my RA60 barely clears the vents on top of the 950. You may not be able to get the clearance Outlaw recommends with the 45a.

On the other hand, if you have a shelf above the 950, you can still use 0.5-meter cables -- I've got a set of 0.5-meter cables between my CD changer and 950 (with four or five inches of separation between components -- see here for a pic) with no tension in the cables.

I have my Sony DVP-NS500V on top of my 950 and so far no problems. The DVP-NS500V is not very deep though.
