Hello, I'm hoping someone here can shed some light here...

Right now I'm only using my 1050 as a 2-channel preamp; I've got the right and left preamp outs going into monoblock amps. The system is wide open waiting for me to finish a cabinet and sitting on my pool table.

I was playing a few CD's through it and while changing to another realized the unit is cooking! Too hot to leave my hand on more than a couple of seconds.

What's causing all this heat? I'm not even utilizing the internal amp, am I?

That doesn't sound right. I'd call Outlaw tech support immediately.

I tried, but it looks like they are unavailable until after the show in SF this weekend.

For those where access isn't too inconvenient, could you place your hand on your 1050 top vents and describe how hot it gets during normal use? Thanks!

Mine ran all yesterday long at about a "38" setting and was only warm to the touch. No problem placing my hand there for an extended period of time.

They do tend to run warm, but too hot to touch sounds odd.

My tube Dynaco OTOH, is too hot to touch.

Thanks for the responses. I was contacted by Scott, of Outlaw tech support (prior to contacting them first, btw!) and he agrees that something sounds amiss. He is working on getting instructions sent to me to send it in.

i have had my 1050 for around 6 months and asked the same question then. mine runs VERY hot, but everyone on here told me it is normal!

now i have to give outlaw a call and find out the real story.

Be sure you are comparing apples and apples.

randog is using his 1050 as a pre-amp only. Are you using your 1050 as a pre-amp only? When using my 1050 as a receiver, it did run "hot" (never actually put a thermometer on it). Now, using it as pre-amp only, it is barely warm.

Also, the amount of airflow can make a huge difference--one of my amps was 110 -120 degrees on top before I put in a 3.5 inch fan--now, it runs at room temperature.

not as a pre-amp, as a receiver it is burning up. have a fan i have thought about installing, just have not had the time. the temp does not seem to be influenced whether it is behind the glass door or on top of the cabinet or having the door open. nothing else in the cabinet gives off much heat to speak of . . . it is all the 1050.

see zacster's post above. When using the internal amplifier, they tend to run on the warm side. The question is can you leave your hand on it or not?
