Saw a picture of the Sherbourn pre pro & looked almost exactly like our 950's except for the name & 1 other thing, on the front panel it adds a 4th label Cirrus Logic, triple "something" bass management. Not on ours. We have 3 labels.

Steve,

There's more than one 950 clone coming. Check this out:

http://www.smr-home-theatre.org/ces2002/home_theater/page_02.shtml

And here is Sherbourn's product page for their pre-pro:

Best,
Sanjay

The Sherbourn PT-7000 is a clone of the 950. Atlantic Technology also has a clone of the 950 planned. The "triple something" is the Cirrus Triple Crossover -- Outlaw didn't include the badging for it on the front of the final 950, although I think some of the alpha or beta samples included the badge for it. Don't expect the Sherbourn to start shipping until Outlaw has the reservation list cleared out and a stack of 950's in the warehouse ready to ship.

(Edit: looks like they've changed the name of the Sherbourn clone since CES. Thanks for the link, sanjay. )

Here is a quote from HTF on what is different:
Quote:
Scott:

We are confident of getting over our dealer back order problems by the end of October.

The main differences are that ours comes with a set of basic cables, the main/video/processing boards are especially calibrated, we use low leakage capacitors, our video transfer is at 55 Mhz, our (optionally) rack mountable front panel cosmetically matches our new amplfiers and we have a solid aluminum volume control knob. PLUS we only sell our product through our network of professional franchised dealers who are always ready to assist in the installation of the product.

Regards,

Ron Fone

There you go for what it is worth.

Hmmm, that looks to me like a statement from Ron Fone, one of the co-owners of Sherbourn, not HTF?

Despite what Mr. Fone says, I remain skeptical whether those tweaks will yeild noticeable improvements to the performance over that of the 950; let alone being worth the extra money that the Sherbourn will cost.

I already have cables.

I'm going to stick with the 950.

Merc, You know what I meant. I did not want to have to spell it out as: A response from Ron Fone posted on HTF.

Smart-alek.

Kevin, are you sure you really thought that decision out?

Sanjay- Well, seriously, I thought about getting the Sherbourn. I thought, wow, if they are including cables, must be really nice cables. That must explain the difference in price, because like yourself, the *other* differences they promote in terms of the Sherbourn being different than the 950 don't seem like to me that there'd be much if any difference in performance. (I don't use a pre/pro for video switching.) But then I remembered that I myself don't believe that cables make one iota's worth of difference in anything. (As long as you're comparing to some minimal level of quality. Gold ends, shielded, half decent heft, about $10 - $20 per.)

Yeah, but I'm sure you understand that they have to do anything they can to differentiate their product from the 950. Of course now watch; after convincing everybody that their pre-pro is not a 950 clone, the cables they include end up being re-badged Outlaw interconnects. Man, if that turned out to be true, I would just plotz!

Sanjay- But why don't they do something *real* to differentiate it?

Like fix the double bass problems for the 5.1 analog inputs run full range, or the 2 channel analog bypass when the mains are set to small? Or at least give a menu config item to toggle that behavior?

Or, be able to select the sub crossover individually between the surrounds and the rears?

Or, copper shield the analog vs digital, or video vs analog components inside, or just the whole chassis...

To me, you know what the biggest difference is? The faceplate...

Kevin,

All good points, especially the double bass situation. Even though many 950 owners have stated that the double bass is not an audible problem for them, fixing just that one thing would be enough for many people to justify the additional cost of the Sherbourn. Instead they "fix" the component video signal path; something that was fine in the 950.

Best,
Sanjay
