Perhaps I've overlooked it, but I can't find a description in the 950 manual. The default is FULL. What does HALF do?

This info is found on page 35 of the manual, in the section "Setting the Front Panel Display Brightness."

Did you try setting it to half to see what happens?

Ah, no wonder I couldn't hear the difference.

FYI,

VFD = Vacuum Fluorescent Display

err, well at least it does in other non-audio industry's

In other words it's the pretty flasing lights.
