Some (all?) movies encoded with the Dolby Digital EX flag cause audio dropouts with the the 1050 configured in 5.1. The suggested workaround is to turn on the center rear channel even if the user doesn't have a center rear speaker.

Two questions:

1) Should the user always keep the DVD selector configured for 6.1, or only when they encounter an offending DVD?

2) If the 1050 is configured for 6.1, but there is no physical center rear speaker, will the rear surround effect be degraded as oppoesed to setting the 1050 for 5.1 (matching the actual phyical speaker configuration)?

I have had my 1050 since before the workaround and have had it in 6.1 ever since and only had a rear center half that time. I haven't noticed any issues. I also could not tell the difference when I watched a movie and I flipped the 6.1 on and off.I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Leave "Surround 6.1" off all the time if you don't have a sixth speaker. The key to avoiding the flag problem is telling the 1050 that the speaker exists, at which point the problem disappears. By not enabling Surround 6.1, there any no changes to the surround channels. You get the 5.1 that you need, without any trouble from the EX encoding problem.

gonk,

Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

6.1 is NOT the same as turning on the centre rear speaker. Processing 6.1 is enabled be pressing the Surround 6.1 button on the front panel. This as nothing to do with the Dolby EX thing. The workaround is to leave Surround 6.1 alone and just go into Speaker Config... scroll through until you come to the centre rear speaker and set it to ON.
