My units serial # is 20300293. Does anyone know when the problem was fixed? At the same time, is there a specific sequence of events that triggers this phenomonen, as I can't seem to hear any hiss even with my ear in the tweeter. But I haven't used all the inputs/outputs yet; how do you get it to come about?

If you want your 950 to hiss that bad I'm sure someone would trade their hissing unit for yours.

Actually, I think most of the "hissy" units were shipped that way. They didn't develop over time. As I don't own a 950 I could be wrong, but that's the impression I get from the forums.
Count yourself among the lucky ones.

My 950 (the one that replaced my original "drop-out" unit that I got in early April) is very close to that number -- I think it's in the 280's. From what I understand, the hiss problem is spotty and may either not be present or not be detectable in all units. I haven't noticed any abnormal hiss from mine, for example. I'd say that you got one of the quiet ones. Kick back and enjoy!

I only get the hiss if I turn the unit on and go to analog(sacd)input, also continue with the hiss in digital, but only if I go to analog first. If iturn the 950 in digital there is no hiss, mean if the owners of 950 do not use the analog or bypass mode will never get the hiss. just my opinion.

It may still be unit-dependent, as I've been using the 5.1 input for DVD-Audio some lately and still haven't noticed any hiss.

Mine does not hiss, even though I use the analog bypass heavily. I don't remember what my serial number is, though.

Mine hisses only on analog inputs also.
Optical or Coaxial are dead quiet.
Regardless, to current date, the only thing I'd be interested in replacing the 950 with is the Lexicon MC-12 - a situation where the price brackets are in no way comparable.

Okay, I tried several analog inputs and voila: there was the hiss. Of course I had the volume all the way up to hear it, with my ear in the tweeter. So I guess I won't have to worry about it.

I tried not to say anything.........REALLY! Why would someone search for a problem that doesn't show itself under normal listening conditions? Then go to the extent of turning-up the volume 100% and sticking their ear in the tweeter. One signal transient and you would have lost either your speakers, your hearing, or both. SMART!

I do believe, also, that "The Hiss" that people have been talking about for the past month or two is volume-independent. The little bit of hiss my unit exhibits is volume-independent.

My hiss is out to seating distance, but analogue only.

Not a problem to date, so I am perfectly patient. I just now acquired DVD-A capability. And had a rather humorous experience last weekend at the local mega-store with 2 employees, trying to explain to me, that what I was “really asking for” were musicals on DVD.
A passerby (an engineer and A/V enthusiast) and I spent an enjoyable 20-min, talking gear and new technology, when he overheard my predicament.
So, - I still don’t own a DVD-A disc, and have lots to keep me busy…I can wait.

I think they could have named it better. If you ask for SACD, nobody's going to think you're referring to video CDs. But when you say "DVD Audio," all too many people think you're talking about the audio track of a DVD-V disc. Only people who have heard of DVD-A know what you're talking about. It makes it much easier to explain SACD to somebody who hasn't heard of it before.

Oh I tried throwing, "you know, - like SACD" into the explanation. Not a blip on the radar.
I had no idea I was so cutting edge. What was really funny was the first tagged person I asked, tried walking me towards the concerts etc on DVD's. When I realized where we were headed, I didn't want to make him walk ...all the way over there... So I said, - explained - , that I knew what I was asking for, were not located in that section. So he stopped and said "I'm sorry I don't understand what your asking. But I think those are what you want. Go ask the front." I said, ‘Thanks a bunch, -okay’, and after talking to 2 guys there, One said,...'I know what your talking about...I'll get somebody. He’ll come find you." Well, they sent the first guy back to find me, - he fussed at me all the way, saying, "I TOLD you that’s what they were." SO I walked meekly all the way there with him said, 'Thanks...I'll just browse a bit'. When the irritated employee walked off, that’s when the engineer, came up laughing.

Maybe next time you just want to leave out "DVD-A" completely (to avoid confusing the drones) and just ask for SACD. They're more likely to admit they don't know where that is, if they don't, and try to find someone who knows. And chances are that DVD-A will be in the same section.
