I decided the capabilities of my Panasonic RP-91 DVD player were more than enough for me and since this was the only player I was going to be using, all I really needed was a volume control between it and my amp. So to me the Sony TA-P9000ES unit made more sense for about $400 less dollars. So I'll be going all analog from the DVD player to the Sony preamp, and will also plan to use the Sony to switch the audio between DVD player and cable TV, and live without all the other bells and whistles (for now).

I should have the Sony preamp sometime next week ... I'll report back my impressions ..
