I WAS in a similar situation (until today)... I have an AEGO2 system, that could be upgraded to AEGOP5 (if it becomes available one of this years ...).
What I decided to do is: I ordered the 1050 (which came in this morning), I bought Paradigm's Mini Monitors and 370 center ($880, speaker stands and tax included), no money left for now for sub or surrounds. I will use the AEGO2 as surround ... and pray I can get money for the 950 and Paradigm's sub on time, and surrounds later.
As I won't have 7 channels but only 5.1, it will be OK to use the 950 to feed the 1050 throught the ANALOG ports, so if half what they say about 1050's 65W per channel(comparable to other brand's 100W per channel) is true, I will have a 5.1 pre/pro , amp SEPARATE system for $1.500 !!!!
The problem with the AEGO that made me go this way, is that as you say, you will need an additional sub, but there's no sub that will go as high as necessary to smoothly blend with AEGO's low bass point (300 Hz). It's a closed way if you really want good sound worth of your investment.
