Folks,

I hope the Outlaw gang won’t mind me posting the URL here, but we’ve just uploaded some Model 950 images plus in-depth news from the Outlaw guys themselves as part of our CES 2002 show report.

http://www.smr-home-theatre.org/ces2002/home_theater/page_01.shtml

You’ll also get to put faces to the names!

anyone else notice the following quote out of that article?

"At the press conference, three new products were announced which will be available within the next 60-90 days."

those three new products were the 950-770-Internet radio Receiver

my question...60-90 days for the 950? Did it get pushed out again???

Kenty,

I believe they were using a generic "60-90 days" for all three products. In other words, by mid-April the last of the three new products will be shipping.

I noticed the quote, too. Some hidden streak of optimism in me concluded that it was meant primarily for the 770 and IR1000. I haven't heard anything about the 950 sliding.

I hope you guys are right. I've been putting off an upgrade waiting for some reviews of the 950/770 combo. Right now I'm leaning toward the Denon 4802, but if the 950/770 is everything it's supposed to be, it will be hard to pass up. Any other combinations I should be looking at? The 950/770 would definetely be at the top of my price range.

thanks,

Kent

Actually, there is a quote that the 770 will be available in February for $1,799.

How about the denon 5803. THX 2 certified full description atwww.hometheatermag.com. Hey Gonk maybe you could add this and the pioneer 49 reciever to your chart.

Looks like a nice piece, given that the 5800 goes for over 2700 on the street, and there is no list for the 5803 in that article, anyone care to guess at how much it will be?

I'll see what I can do -- both look like fitting additions. It may be a week or two before I get them included (may take that long to get full details on the 5803 anyway).

i've got a question. the article stated that the 950 has "a 6-channel analogue input for DVD-Audio and SACD players" does it mean 5.1 or 6.1?
they also said that the number of digital inputs maybe not enough.. i totally agree w that i'll run out of digital in's when i get done hooking up the system. hmmm

The six-channel analogue input is a 5.1. It was a 7.1 input (8 channel) on some earlier photos. Nobody knows where the extra two channels went to. :-)

Howdy,
Just got back from the CES. My main objective was to go to the Outlaw booth. I'm on the list for the 950 and now that I've got an SACD player I need an ICBM. A couple points: 1) At the booth, Scott Jackson(I think that's his name) said the 950 is to ship no later than the end of September, 2)What would you plug into 7.1 analog inputs?

Stuart, was that you taking pictures of the 950 about 2:30pm?
About the same time, two guys from Cirrus Logic came in to the booth. They just happened to be the engineers that designed some of the chips. They were especially impressed that Outlaw used their very best DACs. In fact they were blown away in general by the 950, the build quality, the component selection and the neet meticulous layout. I think I saw one of them actually drooling.
Oh, did I mention that I'm not taking my name off the list.

Patrick,

"Stuart, was that you taking pictures of the 950 about 2:30pm?"

No, I'd be a few thousand miles away about then. It might have been the writer of that part of our CES report, Nigel Pond. He's tall, well built (not overweight), English and would have the most impressive digital camera you've ever seen. Does it sound like him?

By-the-way, we refer to the analogue inputs as "six-channel" rather than 5.1, since some SACD recordings use six full-range channels, rather than five full-range and one LFE.

Indeed, especially as I have exactly the same model. Anyone who knows Nigel or myself will appreciate the irony.

All to come – the 770 was at the Alexis Park and will be part of our coverage from that venue. We’ll also have more info on the Denon (back panel shot is part of E. Brad Meyer’s report) and Yamaha, plus the new monster from Pioneer. Given the scale of our coverage so far, you’ll probably be surprised to learn that we’ve only uploaded about 25% of our material; the remainder will be added on a daily basis during the weeks to come. There are only so many hours in the day and I think the guys have done really well.

Hey Patrick - was the 950 available for listening at the show? If so did you have the chance to hear it? And if so, what are your (hopefully detailed) impressions?

Thanks,

HT Crazed,
I did listen to the 950 driving the new 770. Interestingly they were using 6 Atlantic Technology towers and a horizontal center channel. They were also using a large subwoofer(unknown). A portion of Juassic Park 3 was demoed repeatedly. I also asked to have the DTS version of the Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" video played(Hotel California).
I don't want to detail my impressions because there was too much going on there. I will say that you definately felt like you were there in J.P. The base was the equal of my Sunfire sub and it goes down to 18 hz. I'm very familiar with the Hotel Cal. video and this sounded the best.
It was mentioned that the 950 was being assembled in the same factory in Malaysia as the ATI pieces but that they were different units. I don't know.

now this is interesting. Gonk has mentioned it already but i looked at the images of the 950 and the P2000 again. EVERYTHING looks the same inside (well, except for the stickers). same boards' ids, ICs, transistors, capacitors... interior layouts, you name it. and they are two different units??? im going insane

Guys,

For those of you who were asking about it, the Denon AVR-5803 is now included within our CES show report:

http://www.smr-home-theatre.org/ces2002/home_theater/page_03.shtml

There's also news of the upgrade for the AVR-5800, which looks like it's fairly involved but not as expensive as one would expect given the hardware change required.

Thanks for all your feedback!

I still can't figure out why it contains four extra sets of binding posts. Built-in support for bi-amping or something?

i think they are for di/bipole or direct radiating speakers. when you watch movie, you should use bi/dipolar speakers; and direct radiating speakers should be used when you listen to your music. you can check the online manual of the 5800 from the denon website. it says something similar to what i wrote above.

Obviously, if "The Outlaws" had ANY good news at all.......they would have posted it either here on the Saloon (which they no doubt monitor) or as a News Update on their web site.

These guys are (I assume) intellegent business folks who understand marketing, as well as their customer base. And if they do in fact monitor/moderate this forum site, they surely know that their loyal customer base is disintegrating every minute they remain silent on these issues with the 950.

I too am one of many HT enthusiasts who have $$$ burning a hole in my pocket. I've got a serious Jones to buy a new HT set up....yesterday. If I don't hear any news (good or bad) soon........I'm just going to pull the trigger elsewhere. Maybe, just maybe, this 950 has got so many problems, that it isn't worth waiting for. And maybe that's why these boys aren't talking.

Which brings me to my original point. They know that they need to communicate with us, yet they don't. This tells me that (at least from their perspective) whatever thay do have to say must be pretty bad news. They obviuosly believe that any statement from them regarding the situation with the 950 would cause even greater harm than their deafening silence.

Evidently there must be some pretty nasty news out there regarding the AT 2000.

Evidently there must be some pretty ugly updates on the shipping status of the 950 itself.

Maybe they spoke too soon as to the capabilities of this new dream 950 pre-amp.

Maybe they've gotten their #^*$?@ in a sling over patents or something.

One thing is for sure, that the consumers will continue to speculate until "The Outlaws" themselves come forth and level with us, somehow, someway.

Or maybe, just maybe, "....all that glitters is not gold."
