Been lurking here for many hours as of late. I think you guys have convinced me to go for the Outlaw 1050... maybe.

I currently have an old (to me--1998) reciever that works somewhat well, but am pretty disappointed with many aspects of it and am looking to upgrade perhaps in april or may. I was originally looking at the Denon AVR-3803 and other recievers in the $800+ range, but my recent order of a projector (Sony VPL-HS10) curbed that desire pretty quickly to a lower cost reciever. Little did I know that for $525 I could have a reciever that is actually comperable to (if actually slightly lacking compared to) things like the Denon AVR-3803! Well, this forum really has me convinced that this reciever would work well for me. The fact that there even IS a forum like this for Outlaw products makes me feel MUCH better about my order. (Heck, it was the great people over at AVS Forum that helped me solidify my decision about the Sony projector!)

My only hope is that Outlaw actually updates this model in the coming months or perhaps releases another model similar to this in some respects.

Sorry for the semi-pointless post, but I thought the board could use a bit of general praise!

You will be proud of the 1050, it sounds great, dont't let the 65 watts fool you, it sound like alot more. This receiver should be in the $2000 range, for $500 this a great deal...

I agree with Hi-Fi. I think you will be very happy with the 1050. I know I am. I have had mine close to a year now and it still amazes me.

If you're going to watch DVD mostly the 1050 is probably a good bet. I watch some OTA and would like to have DPL2, but such is life....

It's not a huge thing, and the 1050, while a bit quirky, is well built and delivers the goods.

The lack of DLP2 and things like that never bugged me much-- if something's not in full-on surround encoding, then I just leave it in 2-channel operation generally...

The main purpose will be for DVD, definately... but this will also be a 2-channel music work-horse for sure, as well as what I'll be using for gaming (I'm a big gaming nut).

Funny thing is that this has almost the exact same input/output configuration as my current reciever except that my current reciever is only 5.1 and doesnt have any multi-channel analog inputs or preouts. I'm thinking that the power of this thing will absolutely slaughter my "100x5" (yeah, right) reciever, and the inputs are just enough for me (even though i have to use an optical switch for my CD changer, XBox, and PS2... no big deal)... I'm thinking BECAUSE I don't need many inputs and really DONT care about the little gimmicky features that it lacks, then this is going to blow all the competition away as far as I'm conscerned.

Curious, though... I have pretty power-hungry main speakers... if I'm otherwise satisfied with the 1050 and have some extra cash in the summer I may want to catch a pair of M200s for that purpose... ahh the possibilities.

65 is 1/3 of 200, so even if you 'upgrade' to a pair of Model 200s you're only going to see a few decibels more volume, enough to notice, but not really an earth shattering volume difference. In real life 65 watts can be quite enough, most of the time.

I like the build quality of the 1050 and obviously the price. It has some minor quirks, but they can be worked around. Enjoy it when it shows up.

What's up with the "quirks" people keep mentioning? What quirks? AHHH you've made me second guess myself. Way to go. (sarcasm)

Seriously though-- is there a particular thread that discusses the quirks in detail?

No big thing, and I may miss a few, but here are the oddities I've noted:

- The svideo switcher, for some folks, can cause image rolling, rumored to be clipping in the switcher circuit. Not huge, doesn't affect everyone and a lot of folks just use the 1050 for audio, using the video switcher in the TV anyway.

- The volume knob (not the remote, it seems fine) sometimes works properly, sometimes misses steps, if you spin it really fast it can sometimes even go backwards.

- Little user interface things, for instance, on the remote the first four sources are video1 video2 video3 and DVD, but when cycling through them on the front of the 1050 they're in a different order.

Nothing that would put me off the unit. The DPL2 wouldn't put me off either, probably, but is more serious than the above, with the switcher a close second.

thanks for that clarification, charlie... I'd say the biggest thing there would be the volume knob issue for me.

I'm a purist when it comes to video switching... nothing short of a dedicated switch box for me if I have to go beyond the functional direct inputs on the display device... wouldnt want to muddy up the video going through a reciever (I know that the quality effects may be negligble on most models, but it would always bug me if i had any video running through my reciever...essential video, anyway).

S-video is dead to me now actually... everything is either important enough to go component (PS2, Xbox, standalone DVD), or goes to my HTPC via composite video for scaling and deinterlacing, then on to my projector with DVI-D. The only S-video i used before was my VCR... can't remember the last time I watched a tape...heh.

Welp, those don't seem like big deals to me. Nothing that would sway me.
