Is the LFM-1 magentically-shielded?

Not that I know of, but mine's pretty far from my display. You might want to verify with Outlaw.

When I had mine open (to replace the amp), I didn't notice any shielding on the driver. But it's hard to tell since it is stuffed to the gills with fluffy dampening material. Unless you plan to put your display on TOP of it, I can't imagine there being any issue with whether or not it is shielded.

I once broke a TV by carrying an unshielded subwoofer by it (within a few inches) while the TV was on.... oops. more TVs need a degauss button.

Yep, you really have to get pretty close with a magnet to do any lasting harm to a CRT. And flat panels are completely unaffected.

Actually, I WOULD like to put the TV on top of it (on its own shelf, of course). I'm not concerned about permanent TV damage, but I am concerned about seeing discolorations on the TV as a result of the sub's magnetic field.

So, Owtlaw peoples, is it shielded, or not?

Flat panels are not the only ones unaffected - all those LCD and DLP projectors (front and rear) are going to be unconcerned about magnets.

LFM1 is not shielded. When I moved my LFM1 to its new location, it passed right next to JVC CRT TV while its on and gave discoloration at the corner of the screen. But it disappeared next day though. So just be careful when you place yours.

Most newer CRTs degauss when you turn them on (that's the wierd *boing!* sound you hear before the screen lights up).

There are ways to DYI degauss using a solder gun. Do an internet search.

I know this because my center channel speaker came in unshielded by mistake. When I turned on my TV the lower 1/3 turned green & purple.

Instead of sending the speaker back (shielding drivers negatively alters sound quality according the speaker mfgr), I just placed 2 or 3 layers of sheet metal between the speaker and my TV. I used scrap HVAC duct metal wrapped in a towel and placed on top of my speaker. In my case, it's hidden by my rack. I could have also slid it under the TV (minus the towel). My TV degaussed after cycling the power and everything has been cool since. Gotta love the internet...

Some CRT televisions will degauss after leaving them unplugged overnight. (I assume the degauss takes place on the next power on.)

A friend had some strange magnetic problem with their TV where the upper left corner was funked up. They left it unplugged all night, plugged it back in and turned it on the following morning and it was fine.
