Hello everybody, given all the knowledgeable people on the board, here is my question; which sub for following setup? Front: Image T65, center: C60 Surrounds: S50 bi-polar’s.
PSB subsonic 6i not an option because down firing sub wanted. I have narrowed down my choices to the LFM-1 and Hsu VTF-3MKII.
Room: 415 sq feet, movies 60%, music 40%. I believe both are excellent subs, yet I still don’t know which to choose. Which would you buy? Why? I am upgrading from a Yamaha YST-305 and the new sub should last for several years. Any suggestions are welcome.

If you go with the VTF-3MKII you can upgrade it down the line with a turbocharger (coming out in december of this year, along with the VTF-3HOs... yes, it has been officially announced in the HSU forums now) for about $199 I think. The turbocharger will lower the frequency response without sacraficing output.

No, I'm too poor to afford any good subwoofers right now. I've just been reading up Outlaw, Hsu, and SVS subs a lot over the past month.

For what it's worth, I've got the HSU VTF-3MKII and it's quite an amazing sub. But I paid a lot more for it than I'd have paid if I'd gotten the LFM-1 instead. I've not heard the LFM-1, but I hear that for the money there's none better.

For whatever reason the VTF-3MK2 (high gloss) comes with no 30 day trial period and no return but full waranty. The difference in $ does not seem that much anymore adding outlaw's shipping cost. What about placing? the VTF-3MK2 has rear ports; is there a min. distance from the wall (planing to place in the corner.) The LFM-1 with down ports should have no problem here.

As you may already be aware, the LFM-1 was designed with input from Dr. Hsu (it is a close cousin to Hsu's STF-3). Both are certainly good subs. I've had great luck with my LFM-1 in a 390 sq. ft. room (3150 cubic feet), which is pretty comparable to your space.

The VTF-3's manual recommends a minimum of 3" clearance at the ports - I'd probably try to get a little more than that if I could, but you don't appear to need too much space. Either way, you'll need a couple inches clear at the plate amp to allow for wiring (power cord and interconnect).

Mine's barely 3" from the wall. Never had any port noise or chuffing. I did have those problems with at VTF-2 sub however. Returned it in favor of the VTF-3. My room is about 325 sq. feet. (just under 2500 cubic feet.)
