I just ordered my 950 pre and am also in need of a good subwoofer. The Outlaw is nice because it's cheaper and smaller but the SVS has 2 12" woofers and a more powerful amp (600watt) I have a large room (app 3000 sq.ft) so I need to be able to move some air. What would you suggest? If it matters I have Rocket 750's powered by an Adcom 7605 (150wpc) amp.
Thanks!
Joe

The LFM-1 is a great sub, especially for the price. My listening room is over 3100 ft^3 and the LFM-1 fills it nicely. The Rocket 750's have some good range, not too different from my Paradigm Studio/60's, so it should work together well.

I sold my SV 16-46 PCi, and bought an SV PB12-ISD/2. Both of them are very good subwoofers, but the PB12-ISD/2’s rear firing ports can be a problem. If your placement options are flexible you should have no problems. If you need to place the rear of the sub close to a wall, (within twenty inches), you could have “room gain” issues. If I were looking at another sub I would try to find something I liked, or two of them, that didn’t have rear firing ports.

From the SVS web site: The SVS PB12-ISD/2 is the subwoofer with a 600-watt built-in BASH amp for about $900. The SVS PB12-Plus/2 is the subwoofer with a 900-watt built-in BASH amp for about $1200.

You could have two Outlaw LFM-1’s for about $1,000 and really lay on the bass!

If you purchased an Outlaw 950 and amp combo recently, you could probably add two LFM-1’s for even less than $1K! Ask Outlaw what pricing you may qualify to receive.

I would wait to see the reviews on the ufw12
It should be impressive. Just my two cents

If one plugs two of the SVS’s three ports, one can tune the low end of the sub down to “16Hz.” However, this is not “free” low-end response. See the online manual for the SVS PB12-ISD/2 and the output vs. frequency chart on page 10. If one plugs two ports, the frequency response starts gently falling off above 60Hz, is –3db lower than without the plugs at about 40Hz, and at 16 – 25Hz is –4db to –6db down. There is a similar but slightly more mild effect if one plugs one of the three ports to tune the SVS down to “20Hz.” While this roll-off seems to have a gentle slope and would not affect the output in an irregular manner, the user makes a choice: rather level output down to near 25Hz or a lowered/falling output down to 20Hz or 16Hz.

As to two LFM-1’s, as discussed elsewhere, there is a mildly improved low end when two identical subs are ‘coupled’ in a room environment, and there are other advantages to either a multiple mono or stereo subwoofer setup. I wouldn’t toss out the idea of two LFM-1’s based on the idea that a single SVS can be tuned lower than a single untuned LFM-1.

I just went through upgrading my HT subwoofer couple months ago. I was really torn between one SVS subwoofer or two Outlaw LFM-1. Buying even two lfm-1 was two hundred dollars cheaper than one SVS PC Ultra that I ended up buying. First, let me say that I am extremely happy with SVS PC Ultra but I am thinking about ordering one lfm-1 to try out its performance against my SVS Ultra. Most likely I will be using lfm-1 for my two channel music only setup unless I can improve my HT sound significantly by adding additional subwoofer lfm-1 to my current HT setup. I played around with "port plugging" on my PC Ultra but at the end, I prefer tuned to 20 HZ. Either way, I think you will be satisfy with both products at the end because they are one of the best buy in the business. Good luck in your purchase and have a fun.

its nice to be able to go sub-sonic :-). it would be nice if outlaw had a sub twice as powerful.

Of course if the LFM-1 has a driver/cabinet combination that is more efficient than another subwoofer, then using less power could still produce as much useful acoustic output. The question isn't about the rating of the power amplifier, but about useful sound level output before a certain level of distortion is reached, either from driver excursion that is nearing its limit or from an amplifier nearing its limit. Tuning the SVS enclosure via port plugging may extend the low end, but cuts into the efficiency of the system as a whole and makes the output less linear. What is the rated acoustic output of each without tuning? How much will the output of the SVS be reduced by tuning to 20Hz or 16Hz? Best to do some research before making a decision.
