Which amp should I get The 755 or 7100? I know that the 7100 is a 7 ch. amp and the 755 is a 5 ch. amp but im more intrested in sound qualitiy. 90 percent movies 10 music.
Ill be getting it along with the 950 preamp combo.

The only difference between the two (aside from number of channels) is power rating. If you have less efficient speakers, the 755 would do a better job, but for reasonably efficient speakers there should be no real sonic difference between the two amps. What speakers are you planning to use? Will you be setting up a 7.1 speaker system or 5.1?

right now I have the polk7200 set but will upgrade to axiom speaker(that wont be for a while though)Im going to get a center channel from axiom and start from there. Do you hook up the sub the same way you would to an av reciever? Or is there a different way? Where do I get the cables to hook up the amp to the pre amp? what kind are they?

If my google search didn't lead me astray, the 7100 would be plenty to handle the Polk 7200s. There are a number of Axiom users in this forum, using both 7100 and 755/770 amps - some of them may be able to shed some light on how Axioms fare with both amps. Before you commit, you might want to decide if you'll be moving from your current 5.1 system to a 7.1 setup - if you think you might, but still want the 200W per channel, you could either consider the 770 or possibly add a pair of M200 monoblock amps at a later date.

Assuming you are using a powered sub, you connect it directly from the 950's subwoofer output to the sub's amp - this is not only a conveniently simple arrangement, but also allows you to make full use of the 950's bass management features. The cables from the 950 to the amp are simple analog audio cables - the same type used to connect the left and right analog audio from a source (VCR, etc.) to a receiver. They are available from many sources, including Outlaw (their PCA is a very well made analog audio cable).

You may wish to make such a choice based partly on the efficiency of your loudspeakers and the size of the room. With average efficiency speakers have a sensitivity of about 90db for one watt delivered, and my speakers having lower sensitivity at about 87db for one watt, I decided in favor of 200w/channel just so that I could be even with average speakers at 100w/channel. (Doubling the power is results in about a 3db increase.)

One reason for having more power than something like the five to twenty watts absolutely needed for most listening, is ‘headroom’ for sudden, very short-term transients that require an upswing in voltage, not to deliver sustained power, but to rise and fall as required without overtaxing an amplifier’s capacity. This keeps the output clear of low-level annoying audible distortion as well as higher level distortion that could damage loudspeakers.

Some may find it hard to believe, but speakers such as mine, driven at close to 50 watts with headroom to 200+ watts, would produce no more sound than Soundhound’s very sensitive mid-to-high range horns using about half a watt with headroom to five watts. In fact, by this measure, Soundhound has more high frequency transient headroom than I do.

I would say that a good, clean, ‘strong’ 100 watts/channel, such as Outlaw provides in the 7100, is likely to be plenty for almost every need, but a strong 200 watts/channel is tempting, isn’t it?

I would say that the sonic quality of both amps, which seems to be your primary concern, is excellent.

i think the 7100 would be plenty, but id probably get the 755. more versatility if you get inefficient speakers, more power if you need it, etc. you can always add on two m200s for 7.1 if you need to and it would only cost 100 more than the 770.

under normal listening levels the 7100 would have plenty of "headroom", because eventhough it has less rms, it still has adequate ability to go over its rms for peaks (i.e. into what is described as "headroom" without clipping). the difference is when that change occurs, at 100wts or 200wts? i doubt you have ever listened to (at home) 100wts of clean/pure power, as it is very loud. 200 is always better than 100 though, 2x better even, for not twice the price... just less channels...

well I orderd the 950/7100 combo I just received the amp but still waitng for the preamp... being that my current 5 years old kenwood reciver has no pre outs ill have to wait for the 950 to hear it. One thing is for sure this amp is built like a tank. I cant wait to hear it!
