Is there a way to add extra front ambiance speakers to the 7100?. I read an interesting article in the June issue of Sound & Vision about enhancing sound with extra front ambiance speakers placed above a slightly outside the main front

Was the S&V article talking about duplicating the main channel signals for those ambiance speakers, or was it talking about some digital signal processing (such as the effects channels that Yamaha sometimes offers on their higher-end receivers)? If it is talking about duplicating the left and right channel signals, all that you need is a splitter to send the signal from your pre/pro or receiver to two channels on the 7100. How many channels of the 7100 are you using? If you are currently using only a five-channel system, you have two extra channels that can readily be used for this purpose.

No actually it was talking about dsp signal offered by the Yamaha RX-Z9 ..which obviously the 950/7100 does not have.

What do you mean by splitting the signal from the 950 to the 7100??? what kind of splitter do i need? can i just hook up an extra pair to the front left and right which will actually drive 2 pairs per side?

It is possible to split the signal with a simple Y-splitter from Radio Shack and deliver the same signal (with some attenuation due to the split) to two amp channels. This is routinely done by people running two subwoofers, for example. As with many things in life, while it can be done it is not necessarily recommended. I doubt that there would be a real sonic benefit to this without at least some processing (such as that provided by the RX-Z9).

it would be louder (more at least) having 2 fls and 2 frs! :-). having 2 sets of fronts (splitting the outputs of fr, frl) is creating more sound and losing seperation; what yamaha is doing is creating an additional "synthetic" speaker position beside the mains. two different ideas, of which i would not put much weight in either.
