How would you say, Harp, that analog is better than digital signal transmission?

If the source (DVD player etc..) is superior sonically than the pre/pro/receiver.

that would be decoding of the digital signal, not its transmission.

The physical transmission in the digital domain may have some advantages over analog, but the end result, sound quality, will not always be improved. Case in point, my Denon 5900 is superior to the Outlaw 950 in terms of it's ability to decode and reproduce sound. That's why it cost what it cost. If the 950 had an iLink or 1394 connector, I would still use the analog connections when listening to multichannel, high resolution audio and probably movies.

so analog is not always better than digital and vice versa. which was kind of my point to start with. however the digital transmission of a signal is better than transmitting that same signal by analog excluding the consideration of dacs, processing or anything else. a digital signal transfer is by its very nature higher quality than an analog one, and can be transmitted on lower quality and less expensive cables because of its nature as well.

Signals - digital or analog - can be transmitted for reasonable distances (as in anything encountered in a home) by cable without degredation, given the right cable for the job. When distances get really long, like in miles, digital has the edge since it is more immune to interference and other signal degredation. Digital can also be transmitted over fiber.

All this is moot in the home where distances are measured in mere feet.
