I plan on triggering the 7100 from an external source. The manual indicates a 5 ma signal from 3-12 volts will trigger. My question is if I have a 12V source triggering thru an NPN, should I put a 2K resistor in series with the collector to limit the current? Also, is it a relay or photodiode? If it's a relay I need a diode to protect from an inductive spike. What'd be really nice is a circuit model of what the load looks like.

I assume you're talking about looping the trigger through the collector of the transistor, which then completes the circuit to ground. My guess is that the trigger input of the amp is a high impedance, and if there is a relay in there somewhere, it is first driven by a transistor. I would ask Outlaw about this however, as I'm just making an educated (or uneducated) guess on how they're implementing the trigger circuit.

Yes, I'd assumed outlaw would reply to this. I think it is a photodiode input as I see infinite impedance to both terminals of the trigger input. Basically I want to make sure the input is current limited to about 5ma, so I don't drive the bejesus out of it.

I believe it is just a relay since the polarity is not marked on the trigger. I tried a 9V 100mA supply, but the relay kept unlatching. So I went with a 500mA 12V and have not had any issues since. Just plugged into my switched outlet and that was that.

Any tech question you have regarding an Outlaw product, e-mail (or call) Outlaws Customer Service, give them 24 to reply on e-m. It's been my experience they are very quick addressing direct queries.

Thanks SLL. I sent an email and sure enough, Scott promptly responded. For those interested, it is a photo input (so it is polarity sensitive, but no inductive spike to worry about from a coil) and is current limited. I'm going with a 1K resistor in series in case I short the connector.

I think my 7100 should be showing up soon. It will be joining its big brother (755) to triamp the front 3 speakers. I didn't spring for express shipping, so its going ground, but I think I may have been nearly the first order. I ordered last friday morning.

Always ask here first. You never know what other Outlaws may have already had experience with. But if no one replies in a few days, having no input on the particular question, or the person who might know just has just missed seeing the question. You can always fall back on e-m Customer S for a resolution. Glad you got it answered. I’m interested in what you (and others) who acquire a 7100 think of it. I would have purchased that unit for our 2nd 950, but went with the last 750, and since the 2nd system is just running 5.0 right now, it seemed a good match. (we can always add a couple of 200’s at a later date). Hope yours arrives soon!

Will a DC trigger rated for 1000 milliamps be too much for the trigger input, or will it draw only what it requires?
