I have a rather old Hsu Research sub driven by a 150W Hsu amp that has developed an annoying hum (and yes, I've debugged all ground loops and isolated it to the sub amp.) Interestingly enough, I have an uncle with the same problem, though his sub is a newer TN1220 with the Hsu VF amp.

The question is this: anyone driving a sub with their M200, and can you think of any reason not to? I'd specifically like to hear whether there are any Hsu owners who've done this. I'd just as soon keep the sub (looks like a coffee table, which gives it a high spouse-approval factor) and add a second sub in the future.

No reason not to. If it's crossoved over properly and the sub is at an Ohm load the amp can handle, then go for it!

The NHT A1 must be manufactured by the same company that manufactures the M200. The A1 is used to power the $1200-$1300 NHT sub systems. The only difference I can tell is the balanced input and a slightly higher output rating on the A1. Otherwise, they are very similar...with the exception of the $400 NHT A1 price tag.

This really speaks to the potential ability of the M200 as a sub amp. Outlaw amps are very durable and I know would provide you many years of audio bliss.

Another thing to keep in mind is impedance - the M200 is rated at 200W for an 8ohm load, but it seems to me that many subs present something closer to a 4ohm load. The M200 can easily work with such loads, and in fact can offer 300W of power when faced with a 4ohm load.

Actually, the A1 is rated the same as the M200 - both are rated at 200W for 8ohm loads, although NHT lists the A1's output as 250W (which is assuming a 6ohm load).
