Audio mode selection with CD

The new (to me) Outlaw is wired and working, but I am still sorting out problems to which I can't find answers in the archives.
When I play a stereo CD on my DVD player, I can select only the following audio modes: Stereo, 3 Stereo, Surround, Phantom. Jazz, Natural, Hall, and Stadium do not appear as I cycle through the mode options. I have the same problem when I have either the DVD or CD input selected. Is it possible to get to these other modes?
Probably something really stupid, but I'd rather be stupid than have an internal problem.
TIA for any info you provide.

The 950 does not have any modes along the lines of 'stadium', 'jazz', etc. (which tend to sound pretty 'synthetic' anyway). The available modes are useful for expanding in the instance of CDs, the soundfield to encompass all of your speakers, including surrounds. There is a 'stereo 5' and 'stereo 7' mode. I like the DTS Neo 6 cinema (for stereo DPL films, and satellite TV) and DTS Neo6 music for CDs. They both work extremely well for me when I use them. You must have your center speaker "on" in the speaker config menu in order for some of the surround modes to work however.

-- The 950 doesn't, but the 1050 does. I think I've heard someone else comment on something along these lines, but I don't have my 1050 anymore to experiment with it. I assume that you are using the digital output from your player. The 1050 may be recognizing the signal as being Dolby 2.0, perhaps? (A Dolby Digital signal would not have the DSP modes available -- pages 26 & 27 of the manual.) Gotta run to a couple of family meals now, will poke around later... ------------------ gonk -- Saloon Links | Pre/Pro Comparison Chart | 950 Review [This message has been edited by gonk (edited November 28, 2002).]

Gonk,
Thanks (again) for your help. (BTW, my whole house/yard speakers sound great with my old Yamaha!)
I do have the DVD connected through optical 1, which is selected for audio on DVD & CD. The face of the receiver doesn't show "dolby" of any sort. I tried different CDs with the same result. I have further checked to see if the problem was the output of the DVD player (a Mitsubishi DD8020), but all looks right there. I get "Jazz," etc. on FM radio, just not where I think my room really needs the DSP--on CD.
I'll keep playing and continue to hope this isn't a hardware problem.

I am able to cycle through all these modes with my 1050 using both my DVD player and my CD player when playing CD's. When I am playing Dolby Digital DVD's I only get the modes you mention which is correct since the 1050 manual states that the other modes are only available for stereo input.
I would contact the outlaw support on this one. It should be working fine.
I suspect it is an issue with the DVD player sending a simulated multi channel signal instead of a standard stereo signal for CD's. Is there a setting on the DVD player for multi channel output for cd's ?
I have a Sony DVP-715P DVD and a Sony CDP-CX450 cdplayer. They are both hooked up optically.

Have you set your 1050's center and rear speakers settings to "ON = Large or Small" / Your options include Off - Large - Small for ceneter and rear speakers.

I have written to Outlaw Tech, but no reply yet.
Meanwhile, I have continued to push buttons. I choose to believe the difficulty is with the DVD player (I have also written Mitsubishi tech). The DVD gives me the choice of bitstream, PCM, and analog 6ch (which I know won't let me use the DSP). I can't see all the modes with either bitstream or PCM.
I connected an old CD to the RCA inputs and I am able to see all the modes. So, I think the DSP must be working.
Anyway, I'll keep checking here to see what others come up with. THANKS!
