I noticed in the 1050 manual that it suggestes to hook up the s-video cable to 1050. Does this improve the sound Quality or are there any other benefits to this hook up?

Using s-video will have no effect on sound quality. However, if you have the choice of using a composite or s-video video connection between DVD player (or satellite, or cable, or VCR if you have an S-VHS VCR) and TV, s-video is preferable.
