I have recently purchased some Paradigm Monitor 9's v.2 to add to my budding Home Theatre/Stereo setup. I had Mini Monitors as main but have relocated them to the rear. My question: What should I set the crossover at for these full range speakers?

Monitor 9 specs:
Low Frequency Extension 33Hz
Frequency Response: On Axis (0°) ±2dB from 46Hz - 20kHz / Off Axis (30°) ±2dB from 46Hz - 18kHz

Also, I have been currently running them as "Large" with my sub off because I'm living in a condo until January when it's back to a real House where I can use the sub.

My setup: 1050 RCVR, Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 9 v.2, CC-370, Mini Monitors and a PS-1000 sub.

Let's look at your whole speaker array:

Mains:
46Hz-20kHz (+/- 2dB), 33Hz @ -3dB
Center:
70Hz-20kHz (+/- 2dB), 50Hz @ -3dB
Surrounds:
57Hz-20kHz (+/- 2dB), 43Hz @ -3dB

So you don't want to cross over much lower than probably 70Hz because of your center. I'd probably start out with the crossover at 80Hz. You might also experiment with setting the Monitor 9's to large and small (especially for two-channel music) to see which you prefer.

Well, for 2 channel, it's nothing but the Monitor 9's set to large. No sub, etc.

So for the rest (Movies/TV/PS2) you say: Monitor 9's set to Large and everything else set to samll with the X Over set at 70Hz on the 1050? Will this still send all LFE fx to the sub for movies/tv/ps2 or only sound that's being sent to the speakers set to small?

I currently added a subwoofer to my system. My speakers, measured with a SPL meter could handle 40Hz before rolling off. Initially I set my crossover at 60Hz. But when I did a SPL measurements at various Hz I got a dip in the 63Hz to 125Hz. The flattest response I got was when I set the Outlaw crossover to 100Hz. So this is where I keep it. What does all this mean? I don't know. But if you have a SPL meter and a disc with various frequencies, you will be able to get a much more accurate idea where the best crossover point should be. Real world measurements are better than technical guesses.

Thats an interesting setting. It seems to go against the grain that speakers that go to 40hz should be set at 100hz. I have read that spl meters(the one from radio shack anyway) needed a seperate chart to dial the sub in corectly, if you included it during your measurements. How does it sound with the x over set at 100hz? I would put it where it sounds best to me even if the meter said I was wrong.

At the crossover setting of 100Hz, I don't know if I can physically hear a difference from the 60Hz setting. For HT purposes I understand from some sources you should have the crossover set to no less than 80Hz.
I do have the adjustment tables for the SPL meter when measuring my sub response.
In any case, I'm very happy with my setup. I try not to get too bogged down by all the techno aspects. It's just a matter of pleasing my ears and eyes.

Here's my first impression:

1. 80hz xover sounds better than 100hz because I have better speakers than sub
2. w/a sub I must set the fronts to small to make the sub work...am I missing something? I coudn't set the l/r front to large and the center to small AND use a sub.

I have Klipsch Cornwalls that are spec'ed into the 30Hz range.

My sub is a Cambridge SOundworks 15" 500W sub that isn't as good as today's $1k subs.

My center is a Klipsch KLF-C7 (75Hz) to I currently have the xover at 80...would less damage the front speaker (and not get the bass in the center produced)?

I'd like to buy an SVS sub and put a Heresy on the center and drop the xover to 60.

These are just my first impressions so I'm interested in other ideas.

I'm under the same impression, I have to have the fronts set to small to even use my sub.

So, can the user adjust the X-over individually per speaker or is it a general X-over setting for all loudspeakers in the system -(sub)?

I can set the surrounds to large or small. the fronts must be small to use a sub. With a good sub this is a good idea. I have great big fronts and a small sub.

The other option is the connect the sub and fronts to the front binding post of the Outlaw and set the xover on the sub (ie to 55 which is lowest xover on my sub ). Outlaw set to sub=no. center =small
