Sometimes I have to push the source buttons many times before the 950 turns on.
Sometimes I have to push the volume up/down lots before it does much.
I've tried fresh batteries several times.
Any ideas?

Are there any possible obstacles in the way that could be causing a problem with the IR signal? Also, are you using a plasma TV - I seem to recall that some plasma displays will interfere with some IR communications.

I am a habitual button pusher. Remotes can be worn out. So it could be age related.

Dirt & dust can get inside some remotes between the layers in the membrane keypad. I've had good results taking one remote apart and cleaning the back side of the button membrane sheet and the face of the circuit board that has the contacts. Just give everything a good wipe with a clean, soft cotton rag coated with some rubbing alcohol. If the rag swipe is dirty, do it again. (Getting a remote apart without destroying it is the difficult part).
