BYPASS question

I was listening to music from the tuner section of the 950 in BYPASS mode and noticed it sounded "fuller" or louder.
I understand that BYPASS skips any DSP processing, but what does that really mean? Is there any DSP processing when using 2 ch stereo?
Thanks,
Mukund

Here's the rundown on stereo bypass mode on the 950: the left and right analog inputs are passed through volume control and straight to the pre-amp outputs, with no digital processing applied. In addition, if the mains are set to "small", the 950 takes a copy of the inputs, converts the copy to digital, applies bass management, and sends the resulting low-pass data to the sub.
In regular stereo mode, the 950 converts the analog signal to digital, applies bass management (splitting the signal into a high-pass for the mains and a low-pass to the sub), and converts back to analog.

So what is the benefit? Is the bypass cleaner/better or just different?

Bypass is a pure analog signal, no digital processing. it can only be passed thru the analog cables, not thru the optical or digital coax.Directly from the cd/dvd player passing thru the processor untouched. does this help?

The benefit is that it allows you to decide where your DA conversion takes place. Some people prefer the DAC in their player over the one in the 950 so they don't want that analog signal coming out of there messed with. Bypass gives them that option.

Ah, ok - I understand now. And thanks for the replies. I figured everyone would be on the 990 thread :-)

So in stereo bypass mode there is SOME bass management for the sub or none? I ask because it appears far less sub (but it does seem to be adding sub) use when in bypass than in any of the "surround" modes. thanks, Bill
