The 1050 is very well made, and has excellent sound quality for the price range. Having now heard Dolby Digital EX, I am of the opinion that the 1050's "Surround 6.1" processing is easily as good as the official EX processing. The s-video issues that have given charlie problems are not universal (I used nothing but S-video connections with my 1050 for a year and a half without trouble), so they may or may not be a problem for you. The 30-day money back guarantee does offer a chance to send it back and get a rebate if you decide that it is a problem for you. I still think it's a pretty good value, depending on your need. If you want a music system, the 1050 is an excellent choice. For DVD watching, the 1050 is also very, very good. If you want a system for satellite, cable, and video tape viewing, you may find yourself drawn to Pro Logic II equipped receivers in the same price range. Whether or not PLII appeals to you in that case is a matter of personal preference, but it is definitely a step up from the original Pro Logic processing. There have been some discussion threads recently regarding some similarly-priced PLII receivers.
