A CD source is a PCM signal, and as such can't be processed by a Dolby Digital decoder. As a result, the 950 will ignore requests to enable DD processing. Likewise, the DTS buttons will not always work (although the DTS:NEO6 mode can be enabled with many sources, including PCM and Dolby 2.0). If you're listening to a CD, you are limited to stereo, 5/7 stereo, Pro Logic II, and DTS:NEO6.

EDIT: I had a random thought that you may have already realized - the surround mode buttons only control the 950's modes when the remote is in the "AUD" mode. Unlike the volume control, there is no way to "punch through" these commands so they control the 950 from every device mode on the remote.
