It looks as if the Outlaw Audio 950 was greatly influenced by the Sherbourn PT-7000. There must be some ex Sherbourn engineers on board with Outlaw Audio.

It is my understanding that the Outlaw 950 was the creation of the Outlaws and then built for them by east tech with the agreement that east tech could sell the design to other companys like Sherbourn after a set amount of time. So I think you have it backwards.

Lasher is correct. The Sherbourn is based on the Outlaw.

Oh, and the Atlantic Technology P-2000 is also an Outlaw clone.

Well done, Lasher and seattleguy. Outlaw Audio and Eastech Manufacturing worked together to design the Model 950, with the understanding that Eastech could then offer the design as an OEM product for other companies once Outlaw has the 950 on the market. The Sherbourn PT-7000 and the Atlantic Tech P-2000 are both manufactured by Eastech under this agreement, and are sold through traditional retail. The list price for both is around $1400, with the differences due to the added cost of the retail channel and some different component quality requirements (although it has proven difficult to determine if the upgraded components offer an audible benefit). The chassis was also the basis for Fosgate Audionics' FAP-T1 pre/pro, with an additional component input, a composite video output for zone two, and a front LCD video screen added.

I stand corrected. I didn't even realize they contracted an Asian company to build their equipment until I did some more research. I like the clean design of all their products.

No problem - a lot of us are aware of it around here because it's been a subject of some regular discussion, but it hardly qualifies as common knowledge. As for Outlaw's manufacturing, only some of their equipment comes from Asia, as you may have already discovered. The multichannel amps (770, 755, and 7100) are US-made. They are heavily involved in the design process and manufacturing quality for all of their products, including those made overseas.

Amazing when you look at the two how different some of the internal components are. It's like playing "I Spy"

Gonk,

Good catch on the Fosgate.

After seeing it in a review in HT several months back, wherein the reviewer gushed about Fosgate's design genius (about a product that was 18 months older than the Outlaw) I sent HT an email pointing out the surprising similarity with the model 950, and asking if this therefore meant that Fosgate was the genius behind the 950 as well.

No response to date.

You mean the GTP-880 ? I hadn't realized that. Based on what I've seen, it's not a pure clone (one more component input, different mix of coax and optical inputs, one less stereo analog audio input, an extra 5.1 analog input using a DB25 port, and an RS232 input), but now that you mention it there are a striking number of similarities on the rear panel layout. Very interesting, and a good catch.
