Option 1: Connect the headphone amp to the zone 2 outputs. This will allow you to use the multi-zone controls to control input and volume level independently of the main system. Caveat: you must connect the stereo analog inputs for any source you plan to listen to with headphones, since the zone 2 path does not include DACs.
At one time, I considered getting some headphones and using the 950's zone 2 so I could listen to CD's while mrs. gonk watched TV, but I've never actually gotten around to it (there are other upgrades in line ahead of it).
Option 2: If the headphone amp has a volume control, you can connect it to the tape loop outputs. This bypasses the 950's volume control and plays back whatever source is active. Caveat (again): you still need to connect the stereo analog inputs for any source you plan to listen to with headphones, because the tape loop is not connected to the DACs.
I glanced at
HeadRoom and found a manual for one of their headphone amps, to see what they recommend -- they suggest either direct connection to the source (CD player, ...) or to the tape loop of a preamp.
