950/7100 comparable receiver?

Well my new friends... I hate to say this, but looking over my finances, I may not be able to afford the purchase of the 950/7100 combo. I am humbly asking for some good info on a similar single unit receiver comparable to the 950/7100 combo. I really had hoped that I would be able to purchase the Outlaw combo as the brain of my new HT. Unfortunately that might not be the case. I'd just like to say that I truly appreciate all of your opinions and continued help! Mike [This message has been edited by Arizona Mike (edited November 07, 2003).]

Mind if I ask a couple questions (not counting this one) to start out? What gear (if any) do you have right now? What sort of budget do you have in mind for a new receiver? What other gear (speakers, display, source components, etc.) will you be using with it, getting at the same time, or in the near future? There are receivers from companies like Denon (the 2803 or 1804 would be possible candidates, although I haven't ever heard them), Yamaha, and others that might suit you. There's even the Outlaw 1050 for $499, although it lacks the latest processing modes (DTS ES, Pro Logic II, or true Dolby EX -- although its 6.1 Surround offers a fair imitation of Dolby EX). Your budget and what you want most from it may help narrow things down, and I suspect there are a few ideas rattling around here. ------------------ gonk -- Saloon Links | Pre/Pro Comparison Chart | 950 Review

Thanks for responding so quickly Gonk! If you remember me saying on the "...perfect speaker" post that my budget was $1500 for speakers. Well, I figured my budget and in order to be able to purchase speakers at that price level I'll need to drop my available purchase cost for the receiver down quite a bit. I also found out how much I was going to have to spend on wiring everything up. I had originally forgotten to factor that in. To get to the point, I guess I would have to say that my new receiver budget is somewhere under $800 or so.

Mike,
Costco currently has the HK AVR 525 for $650. These are solid receivers and that price should leave you some wiggle room for whichever sub you choose [from the Outlaw to Outlaw thread].

Since this thread was picked to place the tease, my guess is a new receiver.
Comparable to the 950/7100??...Hmmmmmmm

I'll take a crack at the tease. Given that the 1050 is unable to correctly process many new DD 5.1 EX DVD's when in 5.1 mode (works fine with 6 speakers). My guess it that they will come up with a 1050 replacement with some combination of the 950 surround processor on what would ordinarily be a 1050 chassis. Perhaps a few less bells and whistles.

Considering my original thread, I'd guess that an all-in-one receiver is in the works. Perhaps something similar to the 950/7100 combo, only remarkably cheaper and comparable to that of mainstream home theater receivers. Just a thought...

It hasn't been released yet, but will be in the "Latest News" section of Outlaw's site when it is. There's also a link at the bottom of this page that will let you get on their mailing list. ------------------ gonk -- Saloon Links | Pre/Pro Comparison Chart | 950 Review

Welcome Redsail.
Damn, I believe Tom Petty said it best, "The waiting is the hardest part". I love when Outlaw releases new stuff. I told my friend who is somewhat interested in HT that outlaw may be releasing a new receiver and he almost dropped the phone, so there is one potential sale. Heck I may buy one for my second theater if the price is right (and it usually is). Hopefully we will hear more about the LFM-1 also. So come on, quit teasing us already, just send the newsletter!

Interesting...Perhaps it will be time to upgrade my 1050 ? I have been wanting the 950/7100 but couldn't get WAF since my 1050 is relatively new. A lower cost alternative may be nice.

If you haven't seen the newsletter yet it doesn't give any specifics on the upcoming model. Only that the 1050 has been discontinued and a new receiver is in the works. Tentatively due the middle of next year.
[No offense Outlaw but I think the 1050 should have been discontinued awhile ago and you should have been much farther along with a new receiver if not ready to introduce it for Christmas.]

Back to the topic at hand. I have looked at the Yamaha RXV2400 as a option (financially speaking... I'm able to get one for around $650) and was just looking for opinions, comments, suggestions from all you experts or anyone else with experience with this model. I have been told that the Yamahas run pretty warm which might appeal to the current brightness of my room. Thanks for the help!
The sales guy at the "toy store" tried to sell me on the RXV2400 based on the video up conversion. What the heck is this, and why is it important? Thanks again!
Mike

That's about the exact opposite of what I've heard and experienced. If it's sound quality that you're most interested in, I've seen some used NAD receivers, somehow the model #T762 rings a bell, for a little above the price range you just stated. It's the model that has PLII, DTS-ES, and the like. I think most would generally agree that mass market receivers tend to be towards the brighter side although I have read reviews about Onkyo receivers being a little warmer than the others. Same here regarding yamaha's, they're not warm. As warm goes, I'd suggest Marantz, HK, and Rotel. With your new price range, you'd have to look for a used Rotel.

Thanks for the advice Alex! I took a look (listen?) at the H/K AVR525 as well as the newer model H/K's (the 430 & 630 which as far as I can tell really only differ in astetics). I couldn't find the 525 at my local Costco, not to mention that the 17 year old emplyoee wasn't really all that much help anyway, so I'm gonna have to give their website a try. Do you know if H/K honors their warranty on their receivers purchased from Costco? Costco is not listed on the website as a authourized dealer. Thanks again for all the help everyone!

You might want to check out this site http://www.hometheaterspot.com/htsthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=5 they have sections pretty much all the major brands. Hope this helps your research.

Is this really legit - to use Outlaw's forum as some kind of general marketing site for all and sundry receivers, pre-pros, etc?
There has certainly been a place for mentioning and discussing 'competitive' equipment - but I think these latest exchanges are 'over the top.'
I think Outlaw's 'hospitality' should get a bit more respect.

sometimes members mean well in trying to help one another out but the latest newsletter does not want any type of classifieds/advertisement occurring... It's too bad we can't use a private messaging feature for those moments when you don't want to "share with the class..."

Mike,
The deal was on Costco's website. I just saw onecall has a better deal on the 525 and I believe they're an authorized dealer.
FWIW, I don't see the problem recommending other equipment and where to get it. Mike has said he doesn't have sufficient funds for the Outlaw combo he wanted and is asking for other recommendations. I'm just trying to help him out and suggest some alternatives. I could care less what he ends up with or who he gets it from so long as he's happy with his purchase. I see plenty of free speech and recommendations of other eqiupment on some other internet manufacturers websites. They realize that not everything will be the right fit for everyone and I see the manufacturers themselves sometimes recommend competitors equipment. I suspect the Outlaws are similar in their views as these other internet companies. I got the impression from the newsletter they were asking that people not turn this website into a classifieds section. I don't think that has been done here. If I'm wrong, I reckon they'll delete this post.
I'd be happy to PM Mike the info but we obviously don't have that ability on this forum.

hk will not honor costco because its a wholesaler (well im pretty sure they wont). the 630 is nothing like the 430, and the 630 is out of your budget anyway. youll have to check their website for the specs though. onkyo is a relatively inexpensive but pretty good brand, but they do rate their power driven at 1khz instead of the spectrum of music 20hz-20khz, like hk and other high end brands do. besides that onkyo is high end too. at that price range youre gonna be looking for a deal somewhere, try a high end store that may have an open item, they usually mark them down quite a bit.

I see plenty of free speech and recommendations of other eqiupment on some other internet manufacturers websites. You should ask if there's a problem...or maybe refer Mike to one of the other free speech forums you didn't mention. The post asked for info on an $800 receiver that's comparable to the 950/7100 combo. Here it is...there isn't one. We don't use the saloon to send people to other brands simply because Scott has asked us several times in the past not to. This section is for 950 feedback. Scott's the boss around here and he mostly gets what he asks for.

The "internet address" I've enclosed for Mike is a forum just like this one. Each major brand has its own forum to include Outlaw Audio where people asked questions. It's something for eveyone to look at. I'm not endorsing anything here. I just bought my 950/775 combo.

I'd just like to say a couple things here. First off, I'd like to thank everyone who has given me assistance to this point. You all have been a huge asset in helping me make my HT decisions (more than you know)! Secondly, I'd like to appologize to the Outlaw staff if I have inappropriately utilized this forum. Obviously I had originally intended to purchase the 950/7100 combo, and when I "found out" that I was not going to be able to I turned to the one place I knew I could get good, solid, honest advice. Again, thank you all for the information and help you have offered, and please accept my appologies!
