I really don't understand this strange 'hobby' of turning up volume controls to maximum without anything plugged in etc. - just to see what one hears.
It all sounds a bit like flying down an Interstate at 160 mph and trying to open the doors and 'see what happens' - or maybe trying to throw the car in reverse or downshifting to 2nd gear in a shift-car.
Incidentally - one can really bust their speakers if somehow one accidentally creates some input. Also - all this dizzy 'volume turned all the way up' should ANYHOW always be done with capped inputs.

I also have Klipsch RF 3's. I first had them hooked up to a Harman Kardon AVR55. Alot of sound for "only" 55 watts. I never recall hearing any noticable hiss. I sold my AVR in anticipation of an upgrade to the 950/770 combo. In the interim, I picked up an Adcom GFA 5502 (300W x 2 @8ohms, 450W x 2 @4ohms). This will be for my Magnepan "music only" system. I'm using a Creek OBH12 passive pre-amp (for now). I guess the point is, I now have an audible hiss up near the speaker that I never heard before. I'm not quick to blame the components...they're well thought of. I tend to lean more towards the Klipschs'...they are sensitive, and I'm throwing alot of power at them.

I don't know why I did, but I tried this a couple of months ago and I heard nothing. I had to put my ear up next to the speaker -- my ear was actually touching the grill until I could hear anything. That impressed me a ton, because a fried of mine has the $1300 Sony receiver and that isn't the case. His puts out a double-ton of hiss. Fletch

Please - will you people STOP turning the volume up to the top just to 'try something' (even if prefaced with 'I don't know why I did this')
If some kind of disturbance gets into your house current you will not only probably lose your speakers but - VERY SERIOUSLY - may PERMANENTLY damage your ear drum!!
All of this 'volume to the top' thing has NO SENSE anyhow - so there is nothing but STUPIDITY going on here!
