The list is obviously outdated.
They don’t have the recent releases with some of the best deep bass soundtrack such as Master and Commander, L.O.T.R. The Return of The King, T3, Matrix Revolution, Hell Boy, The Punisher and…. etc.

At least, this is the most complete I found so far which includes the chapter and scene of the movies. Most other suggestion just name the movies. So I guess that list is a good start

Maybe we can start our own database of movie, chapter, and scene for subwoofer & HT demos in this forum.

That’s an interesting idea. That may get the chapter numbers more accurately than the list above. One of the most impressive DVD bass demo of all time (IMO) is in The Two Towers when Black Rider (Nazgul) flies over marshland on a dragon which is in chapter 12 (not 14 as they listed).

Also in The Two Towers, they didn’t include chapter 41 when Helms Deep wall explodes. I guess even SVS staff didn’t think it has enough bass impact just like I pointed out in this forum. Perhaps I wasn’t overreacting all along…

T3 is full of deep, intense bass. I popped it in the player yesterday and thought everything in my living room was going to shake loose! One of the best explosion sounds came from the scene where Ahnold is driving through the desert and has to cut out his damaged power cell. He tosses it out the truck window and the following explosion is awesome! I think it might be time to upgrade the ol'subwoofer....

Sorry....I wasn't paying attention(my wife can attest to that!). It was right after the first battle with the Terminatrix, and arnold was damaged by the T3's pulse-cannon arm weapon thingy. The future Mrs. Conner was still locked up in the back of the truck and John Conner and the T-100 were in the cab, before stopping at a gas/food mart where they picked up food. If I had thought of this thread at the time, I would have made a note of the chapter. I was just taking advantage of having the house to myself to "test" the system

Okay...I've got it! Chapter 13, 40:40!

I find Chapter 25 of Finding Nemo to be outstanding. When Darla taps on the fish tank, my subwoofer shakes the whole house.

Thanks for the input.

I was thinking more in the line of what’s not covered by SVS’s list or their misprint of chapter number…

i always prefer watching movies that i really like with good bass, rather than one specific passage of one specific movie just to judge whether the bass is sufficient.

the goal is not to burst your eardrums, it is to complement the film and make the experience more realistic. or so i think...

if i want to test something, ill test it using proper testing equipment or at the least using test tones, etc.

If you just bought a new sub and own some DVDs that you’ve seen already, then playing segments of it makes sense if you just want to test the new sub or even do A & B comparison with the old one.

I don’t recall anyone suggesting that hopping from scene to scene across several different movies is a good way to set up and integrate a subwoofer with the rest of the audio system or “to judge whether the bass is sufficient.”

Watching a movie in the full context is great and can, after a setup, help one to appreciate a good sub properly integrated.

I think if you have 10 to 30 minutes to demonstrate a sub to friends, demonstrating a few favorite movie scenes and musical selections is a good way to go – kind of like offering them a few cookies when there isn’t time for a meal.

Do we need to lighten up here for a minute?

I don't think my initial intention is for me or others to just play the scenes listed to "test" their HT and subwoofer setup. But to watch the movies in whole. However, it is nice to know which movies have the bass extension to make the experience more enjoyable. Or just it case, after watching the whole movie, if the viewer wants to replay the scenes with the bass extension, this list will help locating them.

I meant that as just an option for comparison. By no means exclusive.
Demo for the guests with time restraints, yes, I agree.

i know that THAT is a HARD thing to do...

lol. see, i am light hearted...

nothing wrong with watching an entire movie to gauge the impact of the bass from your sub(s), but you are doing an injustice to all to show segments only!

perhaps if more people had proper subwoofers, they would enjoy the milder passages of movies where the bass can be more subtle but yet still impart its magic.

The Good News Everyone here is invited over to my home theater for a killer demo.

The Bad News I will only be playing test tones consisting of sine waves, pink noise, and warble tones.

No pain, No gain.

that isnt what i would consider to be a "killer" demo, but, no surprise here, i wouldnt be attending anyway...

the only bonus would be that one wouldnt have to be there as long as it takes to watch a whole movie.

Curegeorg is certainly entitled to his opinion and, in some ways, I partially agree with him.

But I have to call you out on the arrogant and rude way that you communicate in this thread and throughout this board. It's quite inappropriate and not consistent with the civil way other board members express themselves.

sorry to offend you. i think that i have toned it down quite a bit over the last months, but that is mainly because i havent seen much to talk about.... forgive my passion, and dont confuse it with arrogance.

:p

Has anyone else watched "Man On Fire" with Denzel Washington? My center channel is set 3-5 notches higher than it should be relative to the other channels so I don't wake the dead and be able to hear everything said, but there are some mood setting bass beats in there that still dominated the scene!

Just thought of something, part of it could be due to the bass being redirected from the center channel. That might still come through at the same level as the center. We were still surprised.

I actually just finished watching it earlier today. I had the volume at a fairly tame level (-25dB or so), but the soundtrack is remarkable. It's also got a great score - including some of the really quirky stuff, like the music on the car radio during the first interrogation.

How about the pre-title intro to Hellboy?

There was the scene after the portal is opened and a lightstand is sucked in. On the other side of the portal you see the stand float past a huge object. The bass was making everything in my living room vibrate like crazy. There's some pretty low stuff in there!

Try listening to "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," extended version; for a subwoofer workout. There are some scenes in which the same low frequency is constantly repeated to the point where my wife just looked at me as if to say "the windows in the room are going to crack." It is the first time I actually thought about grabbing the remote to trim the sub down a couple of decibels.

what scenes? got it but havent watched it yet... not that i would get to listen to it loud enough because i would get the "the bass is too loud" complaint with the first rumble...

I find this thread interesting as to what people think is a good bass demo for their subwoofers. I used to be thrilled by the wow factor of deep bass in movies. Rattling windows and shaking floors. But now my criteria is whether or not the bass in the music sounds clean and appropriate. Nothing is worse for me than booming bass when listening to music; as I listen to more music than watch movies.
That's my take on the criteria for a good sub. laugh

i prefer the bass to sound as it was intended to sound, however that may be. i watch movies, so it is what it is.

Where can I obtain the info on the way it was intended to sound? A link or DVD special feature section?

MCH, the topic is "movie demo for your subwoofer." What movies do you watch for their music scores as a subwoofer demo? Titanic's score is good, but I never thought of using it as a movie demo. I believe the original question was for movies, that's why you have seen so many replies regarding the "thunderous" bass of movies and not the accuracy of music in this thread. I do agree with you regarding a sub's ability to compliment the mains for music.

Curegeorg, I cannot give you specifics right now, since it is late and my family would not appreciate me loading the movie right now. I remember the scenes being on disc two. Some help that is. When I get a chance to watch the movie again I will let you know.

just watched Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World again tonight and it rocks. the movie is pretty good as well, but the dts surround sound was even more impressive this second time. it was interesting to see that there was about 300mb larger of a sound file with this dvd than a typical dvd in dts. i know it has been mentioned before, but if you havent seen it yet, you are really missing out.

I was hoping that you'd have some info on this. I am very much interested in finding out about DVD audio experiences as intended by the director / engineer or whoever’s in charge of producing it.

well what i meant was that the sound reproduction should sound the same as the sound construction... i.e. how it is supposed to sound. no distortion or electronics interfering with the sound i am hearing. if a person is beating on a drum and you happened to hear that sound in person, ideally you would hear that exact sound being reproduced through your system when playing it back off of a recorded media. rather than making everything that comes out of my system sound the same or good, id just like to hear it as i am supposed to hear it. accuracy is important to me.

i dont think there is anyway for you to know how something is supposed to sound, unless you made it and recorded it and play it back (or something similar), but having practically no distortion and good equipment will get you very close...

if i can hear the "cue" of the bass drum (which is not bass) before the actual bass drum then i would guess something ain't right.

and i know ain't ain't a word because...
