This "hot" mixing doesn't necessarily create a dialog problem, especially if you are like me and adjust your volume on the fly rather than pre-setting it to a specific point for DVD watching. The biggest objection I see to the practice is the danger of pushing closer to the upper recording limit (the "digital clipping limit" soundhound refers to in his first post in the thread above), although Wayne's complaint about calibrating a home system to operate at reference level and running into "hot" discs also has merit. The whole thing reminds me of TV manufacturers' habit of calibrating TV's at the factory to look good on a giant showroom floor even though it leaves them severely mis-adjusted.
