For all you that need some awesome material for a subwoofer demo; this is it. This DVD is being claimed as the new standard for sub demo. It has incredible clear sound effects (not even in DTS) with substantial bass that will test the mettle of your sub.
It's not bad movie either.

Wayne. I don't understand what you mean about the dialog problem? I couldn't tell anything wrong with the dialog. I have a set of very fine speakers. As to a hotter recording that is probably true (like DTS). But I couldn't tell anything amiss in the soundtrack.

This "hot" mixing doesn't necessarily create a dialog problem, especially if you are like me and adjust your volume on the fly rather than pre-setting it to a specific point for DVD watching. Wayne's referring to this thread . The biggest objection I see to the practice is the danger of pushing closer to the upper recording limit (the "digital clipping limit" soundhound refers to in his first post in the thread above), although Wayne's complaint about calibrating a home system to operate at reference level and running into "hot" discs also has merit. The whole thing reminds me of TV manufacturers' habit of calibrating TV's at the factory to look good on a giant showroom floor even though it leaves them severely mis-adjusted.

The "Underworld" DVD can indeed be added to the growing selection of motion pictures that make good use of the LFE channel. I would guess that a lot of the sub action was stong in the 30 to 40 cycle range. Occassionaly I would hear/feel something down near the 20 to 25 cycle range.

DVD's like The Haunting, Lord of the Rings 1 and 2 and Das Boot have longer, sustained action the the 20/25 cycle range.

When it comes to recognition and awards that may follow, innovation counts a lot. While it is a good movie (entertaining), too bad it does not have much of it.

Man, is this one LOUD movie. I had to turn down my 1050 at least 3 times to get it to a comfortable listening level. It is a pretty active soundtrack, however, which is nice. The surrounds start up right from the opening credits.

Overall, a decent soundtrack but a pretty disappointing movie. I was expecting a little more excitement. I'm also pretty glad I just rented it instead of a theater viewing.

I second that opinion Jason, great sound but rather trite story line. Its like a mish mash of Blade/Matrix/Batman(girl?). Not really worth owning...two viewings and its a dust collector.
