I think at least half the new discs I buy are soundtracks. I like having the "feel" of a good movie. I'll also find artists through some of these types of songs, like Oakenfold.

If movie sound track albums contained "the songs from" rather than mainly being composed of the background music writen to enhance the movie I would probably buy some as complations of great songs. Casino - Good Morning Vietnam - Forest Gump - I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now.

Believe it or not, I've always liked the soundtracks to the movie versions of Hair and Tommy. It brings me back into the films. Plus, it's just a trip to hear Jack Nicholson singing. :-)

I found this thread just today and lately I realize that there are several movies with excellent soundtracks, more so than I remember in the past. No, not Oliver, but I did buy Matrix Revolutions and it sounded excellent in 2 channel, with drums, chorale and symphony. Of course there is LOTR. Anyway, try Matrix and listen. It makes me realize how good movie soundtracks can be, if the producers put their heart into it.

There are many types of music used in movie soundtrack, however very often orchestral music is used. When listening to them, one should think about the composer. In the movie Apocalypse Now, they played Wagner’s "Ride of the Valkyries", in Die Hard (first one) starting Bruce Willis, they played Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, "Ode to Joy" when the bad guys broke open the safe. Then there are orchestral music soundtracks that are variations off of classical music such as Darth Vader’s theme music in Star Wars by John Williams of Boston Pops which echoes the funeral march by Chopin (if I remember correctly). Another example would be in Gladiator starting Russell Crow when Maximus and Commodus were being lifted up to Colosseum floor for their final match, there was a hint of Mozart’s Requiem.

There are many good songs written as movie soundtrack but as far as the rest goes, I considered them as side dish compare to the masterpieces through out music history. May be someone else can view the works of current composers differently in about 100 years from now when they have been time tested.

I don’t spend money on soundtrack CDs. Instead, I bought Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 CD and listen to it the way it was meant to, the whole hour and ten minutes (plus minus a few minutes). Buying those fragmented classical music is not the way to go.

Traditionally I don't buy compilations but I do enjoy movie scores/soundtracks. Usually compilations are some record company bozo's worthless opinion of the "best of" or "Top 40" hits that ignore the artist's better work found on B-sides or albums. I prefer to burn or tape my own compilations so that I can skip the fluff that gets inserted on commercial CD's. Movie scores or soundtracks are a great way to get a group of songs that elicit moods or themes, generally put together with a little thought in the process. Here's a few that I keep in semi-regular rotation:
