whats wrong with dsp modes?

i know thier not that important but, why do all the dsp modes(jazz,hall and stadium) sound alike and have so much reverb. its like being in an echo chamber on my unit. while not my first choice to listen to, i would like them to work correctly. is everyones the same way?? oddly my natural mode is fine.

Most of the DSP stuff is gimmicky and overdone, in all implementations I've tried. The 'natural' is OK fo rsome things, and 'stadium' was kinda fun for the superbowl.....

Yep. That's the biggest reason I never use 'em either! Although stadium was a little fun for some of the Olympics.

I've found that the Jazz DSP can be pleasing with crufty old recordings from the local jazz radio station. I agree,though, that it sounds too reverberant when the DJ speaks or with vocal music.

No one actually knows why the DSP modes exist. Perhaps for the same reason mold
forms on cheese. It is a kind of feature
creep that manufacturers feel obliged to
add because the others have it.
There have been a few proprietary modes that
actually add value. I had one in an older
Pioneer reciever called "DPL Cinema" which plain sounded better in my room. Yamaha has a couple like that as well.
The basic answer is, however, that DSP modes
are a triumph of technology over reason.

Or perhaps that if you don't use them, they don't hurt anything, and they're fairly cheap to include. More of a "why not?" type of situation... if somebody uses and likes "Stadium" mode, who does it hurt? If a tree falls in the forest...

Good point this is a hobby, not a religion.
If two consenting adults wish to use
stadium mode, hey, go for it!

Is there any way to turn them off completely. There are 8 surround modes to cycle through when watching a non-DD or DTS source and I switch back and forth (or just forth, since its a one-way switch)frequently. The DSP modes just get in the way.
