Since a number of us prefer to use the 6-channel bypass instead of the two-channel analog inputs (for sound quality) and some are getting BOTH DVD-A and SACD systems, how about a simple switching box that would add one or two additional 6-channel inputs to our Outlaw 950's?

There is actually a really excellent solution that involves a Sony multi-channel preamp (TAP-9000 ?) and the 950 working together. The Sony isn't too costly.

Sort of a mass produced version of this often-mentioned creation, tucked into the chassis used for the ICBM (or a similar one if there's not enough rear panel real estate), but without the size and cost of a Sony TA-P9000ES? I think it's a very good idea.

A switch box like this can be easily made (and more cheaply) by using either a 6 pole double throw relay, or three 2 pole double throw relays that have 12 volt DC coils. A small 9-12 volt DC wall wart can supply the power for switching the relay. Solder the inputs and outputs to the relay, add a power switch that switches the power to the relay's coil, and you're good to go. I'm sure this is how the switcher box above is made.

All very true, but for $400 you can have a 'pure analog' signal path that you can switch into a bypass mode for HT. Sounds like a reasonable price to pay, but maybe that's just me.

Relay sounds like pure analog to me.

Sure. What I mean is that the p9k is a purely analog device (for those who care) and as such also includes basic input switching and gain control without passing through anything with digital circuits. It also solves the double bass issue in one fell swoop.

To make it all work, it also includes what appears to be a relay based unity gain bypass input that allows it to sit transparently between the 950 and the amps when not in use.

Quite a lot more than a relay box, but all potentially desirable features, and $400 isn't a lot of money really, when taken in perspective.

I agree Charlie. By all accounts the TA-P9000ES is a terrific box and an ideal solution.

Unfortunately, unless I could find a used one at much less money, it ain't in my budget right now -- even though it IS on my wish list. A simple switcher would be less expensive and easier to pop for.

That may be one of the biggest problems with the TA-P9000ES -- it is no longer made, and they appear to be getting scarce on the used market (where they typically go for $400 or more, which is not far from the $500-$600 they sold for new). Just goes to show that there is a market for such a device...
